August Issue Top Gear Magazine/M5 Info

The August issue of Top Gear magazine quotes the M5 at 507hp and 384lb-ft and says it will get to 125mph in "less than" 13 seconds yet it still only quotes less than 5 seconds for 0-60. How is it doing that? It cant be that light and it doesnt have that much torque, what gives? What do you guys think about these M5 specs VS the W211 E55?

PS-Is it me or is the new M5 Dog Ugly?

384ft/lb out of a V10 motor??? That seems VERY low to me. That thing is going to be a slug compared to the E55.

Ah well.. Thank God I took my name off the list for one.

Yeah, that torque rating is pretty unimpressive especially with 10 cylinders. Redline is 8250rpm. If it's getting to 125mph in under 13 seconds, Id say we stock E55 owners might have something to think about. It makes no sense to me how it can do that with 132lb-ft less than the 211 E55 and only 14hp more.

It doesn't make sense. I have read that in many magazines and they all seem to puke out what BMW gave them as a press release. has anyone driven the car yet? Any actual times? If not, I think we should wait for the actual tests.

2001 BMW M5
Do not forget that the M5 is going to have very aggresive gearing as it will have a seven speed gearbox. The engine is very high revving and will not develop that much torque (which is too bad). I am sure it will be a monster, but I think you are going to see a lot of electrical issues and a high price tag. I guess only time will tell.

The look on new M5 drivers faces when they get owned by slighly modded E55's will be priceless. We have more than enough time to be ready for their arrival anyway. :v Not to mention that the new M5 motor will be so wrung out in stock trim that there likely wont be very many options to increase power. In other words, they are gonna be damn close to maxxed out as soon as they leave the showroom floor, muahahahaha!

Torque is predominantly related to engine size in NA cars so the V10 configuration has little effect on torque.

5L and 510Nm is not bad check any NA engine of similar capacity and you'll see.

Its more like 14-15 sec 0-200km/h.

Its performance philosphy is different to AMG so comparing engine torque figures is totally useless. Look at power to weight and you can see they are a good match (M5 & E55)

You don't need to goto the nurburgring to enjoy the handling traits of any car so the whole "they are not sports cars for track use" is a BS argument. Tell me how you can enjoy an E55's straightline performance wihout going to the track. With low speed limits everywhere you'd get 5 sec of fun every now and then, the same applies here.

The M5 could have 646 lb-ft torque if it was S/C...lol

In general i think that AMG owners seem to mod their cars more than M owners. Is it simply because its easy to do or is it because you get bored with its 1-D performance. The M5 wasn't designed to be an all out drag car so any lacking in straight line performance can be accomodated by its other skills. I'm sure Dinan etc will produce worthwhile mods anyway, but they won't be cheap. You can goto FI but many $$$ needed. People seem to think you can't FI a M engine which is completly wrong.

credit where its due

I think it is amazing that BMW had gone a few steps further in squeezing 100bhp plus hp from 5L which they had in the previous M5. If you read about the car, it has one of the most advanced computer control unit ever made on road cars.

I don't wanna slag off Bimmer because I drive a Benz myself but the M5 is a good car performance wise
