Unhappy E63 possible bad Camshaft Adjuster?

I just purchased a 2007 E63 AMG with 136,000 miles on it, and upon arrival to my house I noticed a rattle on the next few start ups while it was warm that lasted about 3 seconds. I've done a ton of research all day and now I'm almost certain the Camshaft Adjuster is what it is, so how badly am I screwed, is it still driveable, and what can I expect to spend? Any help is extremely appreciated as this is my first AMG car.

To be totally honest all M156 make noise in the first few seconds at start up, then quiet down. I would take it to a competent shop, to have it properly diagnosed.

To replace cam adjusters, are probably $700 per adjuster just for the part, and labor $1000+\-

It would be cheaper, if you were replacing other components like head bolts and lifters, as cam adjusters must come out anyway, saving you a few dollars.

Appreciate the response. I have a friend who is going to help me do the adjusters so I’m not spending an arm and a leg at a shop. I take it this is something you shouldn’t drive it with until it’s fixed, correct?

Check out 63motorsports.com they have cam adjuster replacement plates, the worn plates are making the noise at start up. Replaced mine last year, 07 e63 112k. No issues since then. I did cam adjuster plates, lifters, plugs all at the same time. You can get a whole kit from 63motorsports.com, message them on Instagram, great people, will get you everything you need. If u have any questions on the process, shot me a message

thats what I was looking at yesterday and it’s good to hear from someone who has used them, how long did you drive the car for when it was making the rattling on start up? Only reason I ask is I do have another vehicle, but just in case I need to take it multiple places I don’t want it to blow up on me on the way there.

You can still drive the car, now if they are super noisy all the time then I wouldn’t drive it. Please watch these videos from Tasos Moschatos, as he is an expert on All AMG engines

I drove my car for a year before the timing went out and the car was missfiring with no damages done.

I drove couple months, extra car for me, so not crazy on the mileage. Check out the 63motorsports Instagram, he has lots of info
