Milkshake under Oil Cap : Other Causes?

I'm doing the valve cover gaskets, and found a little milkshake. Shows up under the oil fill cap, and in one oil "pocket" on the passenger side head. No milkshake in the rest of oil in the head, and no milkshake on the dipstick.

Is it possible this is condensate, as opposed to oil - coolant mixing?

It's possible it's condensate. Usually see that on cars that only do short drives and don't get fully hot enough for any condensation to evaporate. I would clean it all up really well and monitor it. Does the coolant look good?

How does your driving pattern look? Most likely its from short drives (I also have some mayonaise under my oil cap during the colder winter days combined with short trips). Take it out for a longer trip and report back, if you still have it then it might be coolant related

Pressurerize your cooling system and see if it is holds the pressure. If not, stop running the engine until the leak is resolved.

Too much milkshake to be condensate. Coolant is entering the oil system. Change oil and report back. Inspect coolant reservoir and do likewise.

Yes, normal condensation from the car not being driven much or from short trips.

Thanks for the many replies.

Coolant looks good, see attached

Many short drives is exactly my driving habit - if that's the answer, good excuse to get out more for a rip.

I hadn't thought of pressurizing coolant to test - will see if I can get my hands on that equipment.

you'll need more than 10 minutes of steady driving to prevent this. idling an engine isn't enough and won't create enough load and heat to burn off condensation within the crankcase.

I will see some of this always in cold winters and short drives. Engine needs lots of heat to burn off water vaper.Summer....never an issue.

That's why in the winter if I have to do a really short drive to do something where the engine never gets any heat I take the Crown Vic beater car and let 20* winter temps abuse that. LOL
And of course that engine NEVER shows any water/condensation at all and that V8 takes for ever to get warm !!!

@SICAMG I see a pattern in your car purchases...

Took the E55 out for a beating today to burn oil off the valve covers from the gasket job. I replaced the cap with a new one, and showing a little condensate but much less. Will monitor but hope this is the explanation.

Change your oil often. You don't want that moisture mixing with the oil.
Still more than I would like to see in the cylinder heds but don't know the miles on your last oil change.

OP get some heat into the poor thing!

Short trips (engine oil never gets to 200 degrees for half an hour) with low ambient temperatures guarantees a dab of mayo under the cap.

Fresh motor oil and driving it like you mean it is GOOD for it. Get to it.
