E55 Vented Dynamic Seats

Curious about others with vented (cooled) dynamic seats if they actually feel the air coming through? My 06 I can hear the fans but don’t feel much, if anything.

This is my first mid 2000s car w vented seats. I have this option in my 2013 Porsche and the difference is very noticeable. Maybe the new tech is just that much better or my seats have a problem to diagnose.

Appreciate any feedback.

I have vented seats in my 07 E63, if I wearing athletic shorts and a T-shirt then yes, I can feel it. But anything else....No.
Now my X5M, I can feel that in anything that I'm wearing.

Cooled seat on most MB are a joke. The new EQS is much better but that have never been up to par from 2003-2018 at the least. Other brands actually you could feel.

Only way to improve them was to get larger fans in the back. The fans are no better than computer cooling fans so you won’t ever feel it. I did my driver side long ago and never cared to do the pass side.

sorry none was back in 2012/13 that I did it. Was simple few screws on the bottom of the seat to then remove the back seat cover. Fans are right there and if you go larger will need to trim some matting to keep them from making noise and fit better.

I will see if I can find an old thread.

Here so the old thread Berti made about it. One thing to note aiming the back ac vents up and toward the seat backs can help some if you don’t already do that.

I just ordered some 92x92mm fans with 54CFM, that should at least be a nice upgrade

I also found 92mm round fans, which you dont need to hacksaw to get them to fit. But they all had lower CFMs (around 40). I also found the tip of the 92mm Delta fans, which have about 90CFM, but I will save that for later who knows haha (type: Delta FFB0912SH 9CM9025)

I ordered these: https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/32808981723.html

Specifics:
  • Dimensions: 92x92x25mm
  • Bearing Type: Ball bearing
  • Rated Voltage: DC 12V
  • Connector: XH2.54-2Pin
  • Rated Current: 0.16Amp±10%
  • Rated Speed: 2400RPM±10%
  • Noise level:31dBA±10%
  • Air flow:54.8CFM±10%
  • Cable Length: 30cm
  • Life: 50000 hrs
  • Weight: 67g/pcs
  • Quantity: 1pcs 92mm

I had a look, and its looks like an easy mod. There are 2 T20 screws that keep the seat panel in place. Just feel at the bottom of the panel and you will find both screws easily. Then just gently move the panel downwards and fold it "out". You will have access to the 2 small 60mm fans and the wiring loom.

These are only 33cfm.

I went with these. Should be here Friday. 2500rpm, ball bearing, 54cfm, 50K hour life

With 100+ temps here in SoCal for a while, this mod can not be done fast enough. haha

Exactly haha! In Netherlands temps have also been quite high, and my aircon is still not functioning (need to replace the condensor) so all cooling is welcome The stock 60mm fans are wayyyy to small to make an impact

Finished this modification this evening. Took a few hours for the drivers seat. Fairly straight forward. I think the hardest part was trimming the matting. I couldn't find my long skinny razor knife. Other than that, no problems. I can definitely feel the air coming through the back rest now. Just in time for a long drive up Angels Crest tomorrow with my daughters.

Some pictures. The fan holes are not perfect haha. I was worried the new fans would be too big when I saw how small the factory fans are. Those things are comically small.

I wasn’t going to use them but the cage or whatever it is was petty close the the fans. I figured a little extra protection wouldn’t hurt.

after driving a bit I did notice the fans kind of push through and create two small bumps on the front side of the seat that I can feel in my back. I probably pushed them in too much. Need to make some adjustments. Cooling is much better though.

I also went to work today, spent about an hour per seat. Trimmed the fans with a multitool (the edges), went pretty fast. The original wiring is self explanatory, a brown wire for the negative lead and a yellow/red wire for the positive lead. I spent the most time in cutting out the material, as I used a very fine (and sharp!) knife, you need to be sure you dont damage the seat.

92x25mm 55CFM fans

They are very big compared to the stock Papst fans

All in place! Compared to the pictures of @Silversun262 , it seems my CLS chairs have a layer of felt instead of the black top layer.

I also need to add fan guards! When I sat in the chair, I heard one of the fans grinding against something ever so slightly. Already ordered them and should be in tomorrow

Yeah that’s a battle and another reason I only ever did my driver side way aback in 2012

Debating doing the seat bottom. Seems a little more involved with removing the seat.
