MP3 in US spec Command yes or no?

Is there an update or not for the US command units so they can play mp3's off a cd? I cant get a straight answer on this.. I would think so, as my alpine units in my other cars can do it.. I have Sirius on my command so I dont want to go Euro..

I'd love to see that available as well. Right now I'm running my MP3 player thru the Aux input.

The 2005 comands have a different partnumber then the 2004 ones...but nevertheless I think (but do not know for sure) that there ought to be a software update available for the MP3 playback as it is also available for the 2003 and 204 eurospec comands that came from factory without MP3 playback.

How does one access the auxilary imput on the COMAND? Is that something a professional installer has to do, or is that something I can find myself?

Thanks.

The Aux input is a a headphone style input jack located in the glovebox. Simply hook your MP3 player into that with a patch cord and press the "AUX" button on the Command unit. You can't control the player (except with the controls on the player) but at least the sound quality is good.

Sweet, I gotta give this a try. Just got it for 2 weeks and already had to drop it off to Laguna Benz because of an oil leak. Bummer!

I am not sure the 2005 model has it. I don't have an "aux" button on my Comand unit.

Don't know for sure since I don't have my car yet, but other head units I have delt with wouldn't show the aux option until something was plugged into it

Oh we have it.
Youll see an option for AUX when you click the Audio button.

Now that you mention it - that's right. We do.
Is the input that little silver receptacle at the top of the glove box? Looks pretty flimsy.

Yeah, thats it. Its pretty stupid if you ask me. I patched my iPod into the thing and all controlling has to be done on the iPod. It'd be nice if it would show up on the screen, but that would require completely different hardware.

So I bought the male to male connection cable to plug the ipod into that socket in the glovebox. How the heck do you close the glovebox with the wire plugged in? Is there a cutout somewhere along the glovebox cover that I can't feel? Or am I just supposed to close it as best as I can and hope that I don't hit a bump that opens the door and spills everyting onto the floor?

I use a 90 degree plug. Works great.

...erm...as far as I recall the iPod was not originally designed for daimler chrysler's audio systems...neither for the D2B nor the MOST based systems...therefor I myself think it is quite normal (and not stupid) that a generic device like an iPod cannot be controlled by a car specific headunit...

I don't think you are suposed to have the cable of whatever is plugged into the AUX to come out of the glovebox...the 211 glovebox already closes difficult enough by itself without having anything sticking out of it.

I wasn't implying that the software was stupid, and it is a somewhat practical feature, what I think is stupid is the fact that you have to have your glove box open and a wire running over the passenger's lap if you want to change the song. Unless you plan on leaving your playlist on random and the iPod in the glovebox, it's quite an inconvenience.

Wow, you've not been searching here! The answer is, put the iPod in the glovebox, close it, and use an RF remote with the remote in the ashtray or center console.

You have to have an iPod that is "supported" but it isn't really that difficult to get one.

RF remote for an IPOD? I didn't even know such a thing existed? But it is a good idea. The only "problem" with the leave it in the glove-box approach is that you are using up the ipod's battery. And we all know that it doesn't last very long at all. Especially if you fast forward from song to song.

I hard-wired a power supply from the back of my ashtray to the power connector on my 1G iPod. Josh K has a similar setup (I believe he has a 2G or 3G iPod). I dunno what I will do for my 4G iPod, but I am figuring it out now...

are there any RF remotes with 2 way communication. meaning you can navigate from the remote through what songs/tracks you want to see/play?

i saw this RF remote, but its just a simple play/pause/stop remote.

http://www.engineeredaudio.com/products/remote2.html

what some home theater remotes do is send information to the products they control, and the products send info back so the user can see it on the remote's screen.

Aha, I did't even know these existed. Now it seems more practical...
