2005 E55 Brake Feel

So randomly every other time I drive the car, when I press the brakes it will be hard. But I let go and press again, and it’s the normal brake pedal feeling. Initial brake feel is like when you pump your brakes parked, hard but still brakes the car. But when I let go of the brake pedal and try again, it’s normal again. No error on the dash or anything. What’s the deal?

“Brake feel” in your 211 E-55 is a mis-nomer. When you apply brakes in your E-55 you are making a request to stop; sent to Oz which dials up a given amount of pump generated braking pressure; applied to the calipers. Press harder, get more pressure applied. Get to point of locking a wheel or sliding around and SBC performs ABS and ESP magic to help keep you from throwing the car away. The car does not have a brake master cylinder as other cars are equipped with. 212 and newer cars got a brake master; MB having learned that SBC; while effective is not all that... or current cars would be so equipped.

The pressure you feel is simulated by the Brake Operating Unit. The pressure to your brake pads is all modulated/regulated by the SBC unit. See attachment for extensive information.

right, but this just started happening after 2 years of owning the car. This is a new brake feeling. Just wanted to know if anyone else had this issue or is this just my SBC beginning to show failure symptoms. It’s original from 2005 with 214k miles on it….

One thing I have come to realize from racing and street driving is the newer the pads, meaning thickness, the better the response and and brake feel. The lower the pads get and the more the pistons have to be extended out the worse the feel.

Also, has your brake fluid also been serviced? It takes DOT 4 Plus, not the normal DOT 4.

If the SBC is on its way out, you will receive error messages first > https://mbworld.org/forums/c219/8443...ml#post8651162

Pro-tip: When you get the red BRAKE warning advising you to not drive the car.... They mean it!

The ‘Back up brake master’ built into the system is not there to drive to the repair shop.

Tow it.

Yes please, don't be like me and have the brakes fail whilst doing 60-65mph. I would not recommend that experience...

Yes brakes were serviced and refilled with the correct DOT 4 Plus from FCP. And hopefully I never see that error message.

looking for a W211 E55/E63
I’ve had this issue on and off with my 05 E55 also, ~136k miles.

Sometimes the pedal feel is “normal” and other times it’s extremely stiff. I am not totally sure but around town with repeated pedal activity it feels like the “stiff pedal” happens more often. If I’m driving freeway/highway it seems to happen less.

Forgot to update this Thread. It turned out to be a bad brake wear sensor. I just replaced all 3 since they are cheap. And boom all good now, system must have been over pressurizing a caliper assuming there was no pad life there while the pads where only 8k miles old.
