What can cause piston Rings to go bad?

Hey folks, if you have seen some of my other recent threads, my e55 was burning oil like crazy and blowing white smoke.
had mechanic inspect engine and said it's the piston rings.
this engine set up only lasted 2 months, was burning oil from first month onwards.
what could have caused an engine (that was fully inspected to be working before it went in) to fail in such a short time? Car was mostly cruised, not thrashed. Is there a way to investigate and find root cause of such a quick failure?

Fully inspected meaning every piston was removed and checked. All rings and cylinder bores in spec......Nope !!
VERY few people know how to work on these engines so someone "looked" at the piston tops with no heads on it and put heads on.

Could rings being bad have caused damage to top end? Im looking for another bottom end, but i think its pointless if top end has been damaged too.

The smoke has gotten worse and worse..

At this point who cares. Your reading into " what ifs" and "what else"
It's under extended warranty like you said so it's their problem, not yours. Let them deal with it and fix it the right way.

Also, don't mess around yourself if its their responsibility, as they can easily say: no we cannot support it anymore as you changed something yourself (ask me how I know )

Driving on bad rings can not only drastically shorten oil's lifespan, it also burns off huge amounts of oil. So unless you're topping it off with fresh oil every time you drive it, it can do damage to everything that requires clean oil.

Especially the catalytic converters over time. They get all gunked up and the heat bakes in the oil...you don't want to replace those suckers !

Would it have damaged the top end?

Car was burning/leaking a TON of oil over 2 months. It went from burning 2L of oil per 1000 kms to around 1L per every 250 kms driven over the course of time (worsening over time)

Totals to around 15L put in over the course of 2 months. Total around 4000 kms of driving.

The mechanic (who assembled engine) top up 2L
another mechanic top up 4.5L
myself top up around 9L,

I still don't understand your questions....it is under warranty so who cares, let them worry about it and just fix it.
