The transposition of homonyms is a common mistake found on informal medium such as a message board (your – you’re, there – their…). Since typo is a common term for a basic writing error it seems more than applicable here.

See, you too can learn something.

Is it your position is that commiserate and commensurate are homonyms?

Exhibit 1 from Merriam-Webster:

Main Entry: hom·onym
Pronunciation: 'hä-m&-"nim, 'hO-
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin homonymum, from Greek homOnymon, from neuter of homOnymos
1 a : HOMOPHONE b : HOMOGRAPH c : one of two or more words spelled and pronounced alike but different in meaning (as the noun quail and the verb quail)

Exhibit 2 from Merriam-Webster:
Main Entry: com·mis·er·ate
Pronunciation: k&-'mi-z&-"rAt
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): -at·ed; -at·ing
Etymology: Latin commiseratus, past participle of commiserari, from com- + miserari to pity, from miser wretched
intransitive senses : to feel or express sympathy :

Exhibit 3 from Merriam-Webster:
Main Entry: com·men·su·rate
Pronunciation: k&-'men(t)s-r&t, -'men(t)sh-; -'men(t)-s&-, -sh&-
Function: adjective
Etymology: Late Latin commensuratus, from Latin com- + Late Latin mensuratus, past participle of mensurare to measure, from Latin mensura measure -- more at MEASURE
1 : equal in measure or extent : COEXTENSIVE <lived a life commensurate with the early years of the republic>

Although there is some merit that common transpositions could be considered typo's on informal mediums, you can clearly see commensurate and commiserate cannot be considered homonyms.

Not sure if the above definition is 100% accurate. I don't think homonyms are necessarily spelled alike! They are pronounced alike but may be spelled differently

Yeah, you do hold the distinction of being the only person on here who ever managed to get him to show up for anything!! I guess the fact that there was no racing involved helped you out on that one!!!

Thanks but I would only take an E class if it was available with a manual transmission.

I just read through the 1st page before skipping to the last. Anyone care to give a Cliffs Notes version of this thread?

I understand the kid showed up and had someone else drive for him? What'd he run? Details please!

Btw Improviz, you are freakin hilarious

Well, the short version is this: the bravado apk exhibited in the first day or so during the delay between his post and our lining up some people to run with him very quickly evaporated once we did get some people lined up to run with him. And finally, so did he.

Imo, he either a) ran an '01/'02 model non-supercharged CL55 and thought it was an '03+ (who knows, maybe some clown even added the "V8 supercharged" badges--wouldn't be the first time; I've seen a "C320 AMG" and an "E320 AMG" out on the road lately ), or just made the whole thing up. No telling....

But it was a lot of fun pulling his chain, that's for sure!!

Lol....damn, I had too much time on my hands back in those days!

Anyway, there is an epilogue: among other things, apk said he'd crush my CLK55, but unlike that wuss, I'll actually show up and race!! Here are results when I ran my stock '01 CLK55 against two E39 M5s like apk's, one stock, one with a Dinan chip & exhaust; we ran two times each, from a dig and from a roll:
https://mbworld.org/forums/clk55-amg-clk63-amg-w208-w209/210290-2001-clk55-vs-2002-stock-2003-modded-m5s.html

apk said he'd slaughter my car, and could beat/hang with a CL55...and yet we see the results: four runs, four wins....and a CL55 would murder my car! He was a BS artist, nothing more.

funny

I am now an hour late for work from reading this thread. Great stuff, wish a race actually occurred though.
