CHECK ENGINE OIL!
Hey guys,
This morning i got a message to check engine oil level at next refuel.
On my old m3, the system told me to add engine oil and approximately how much. This happened often due to the big engine.
Is it normal behavior for these cars to run through oil fast, how do I check how much is needed and where. Also what type of oil do the cars require exactly.
thanks for your help

Until your engine is fully broken in, it will tend to burn some oil. I've been told from AMG anywhere up to a quart every 1000 miles. Although, I have not seen or heard any stories like that. My 07 E63 has 27900 miles, and doesn't burn a lick of oil. Over the first year, after some very spirited drives, it would definitely burn oil. But after the piston oil/compression rings have seated, it will run like a champ. And you will only need to add oil during your annual A or B Service.

same thing here after having it for 3 months. I put in a quart, then relized i over filled it. Damn... ended up just taking it in for an oil change since i over filled it.
It happened a second time. Eye ball how much you're down and fill it up 1/2 at a time, it usually takes 5 minutes for it to filter to the oil pan below. So, what I do is put in 1/2 - 1 quart depending on how much it's down, then just leave it until I get home the next day to check again.

If the light comes on just stop in at any dealership and they should top it off for free. Mine used oil until around 10k (stopped using any since then.)
Any dealer here in SoCal will top it off (at least at the ones I stopped in at: Calabasas, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica.)

If you change your own oil an overfill it, the dealer will add oil as a courtesy. But if you need ro remove some, then they might charge you a fee. But that depends on your Service Advisor.

0W-40 was first recommended for the M156.
Then 5W-40 was recommend for the M156 later on.
Phosphorus is the protective additive in Mobil 1. 5W-40 has less ppm of phosphorus. 0W-40 has more ppm of phosphorus. But phosphorus also can damage cats. To protect the very latest emission systems, Daimler AG went with the new(er) 5W-40 formula. But at the risk of less phosphorus protection. Mobil 1 claims there is enough phosphorus in 5W-40 to not worry about it. But they do advise those with modified high performance engines to use their formulas with higher ppm of phosphorus. But at the risk of killing the cats.
Pick your poison. Either 0W-40 or 5W-40 is perfectly fine in the real world. I say just use anything approved against MB 229.50 or 229.51.
fwiw, this info came from a Mobil 1 employee. Take it how you want to but this is what he told me. And if you check their website they'll tell you to use ESP 5W-30 ("compatible with latest cats" and also approved against 229.51.) So go figure....
