Rattling/Vibration noise from plastic between middle vents.. any suggestions?
Hey guys,
Ive recently started having this extremely annoying rattling/vibration sound in my E63. I know exactly what the source of the sound is, its the piece of plastic thats in between the center air vents. It just sounds like its a little loose, its a very plasticy sound and if I apply just a little bit of force on it with my finger while driving, it kind of goes away, n then I would let go and it would come back again.
Any ideas how I can fix this?

I have a very mute, but still annoying repetitive "squeak" type of rattle-vibration, coming from somewhere that I can't seem to pinpoint. It almost seems like it's somewhere inside the dash, or inside the center-console, etc. Which would suck. It only shows up when the car is stopped, and in gear i.e in "idle load".
I'll try and hear if maybe it's the same thing as yours.

I know its not acceptable but these damn noises always come out in the cold when the parts constrict.
I just turn up my radio. I hate going to the dealer.

Especially going to the Dealer for a rattle you can't yet pinpoint. You gotta ride around with a Tech, try and find the sound with him, and/or have them tear stuff apart to trouble shoot it. Sucks.
At least if the rattle is in a seeable place, and is obvious, it's a bit easier (my W211 had chattering locks, easy and clean fix, other rattles in it were much harder to diagnose).

I'm hitting 10K next week. I was going to go have them fix it when i went in.
I know that plastic piece, especially on the freeway. I have to take my 2 fingers and press against the plastic just below the 2 wind strength knobs. that's stops it, then suddenly so quite.
I tried pulling it off so I could add some tape, but it's not easy.
Vic, turning up the music is fine, but when i'm on the phone, it's annoying! I can't hear them, they can't here me!
I'll let you know what the dealer says. If anyone else finds a fix, please share.

sorry it took so long to update, got this taken care of last week.
So, they are aware of the rattling noise from the middle vent console. They take off the vents and put this rubber chalk / felt between the plastic cover and the piece below it. Worked like a charm. :-)
They also finally took a look at my pano roof popping / cracking noise when the chassis torqued. They supposedly "cleaned" it. I think it sounded more like grommets popping out of place, but whatever they did, fixed it too.
Wouldn't replace my home link, stating it costs $1500 for the piece. So they reprogrammed / recoded it because that's what MB HQ tells them to do. I sure hope it works!

That's good they fixed yours.... guess I'll take my back to dealership .... also about one month MB replaced my brake pads because of the horrible loud embarrassing noise..... but now its back!
Was thinking of getting aftermarket pads... I hear akimodo (not sure spelling) are the way to go....

And, did you hear it well when the engine was turning (while starting)?

Great news about the middle plastic stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Ill go to the MB dealership in Dubai and see if they can do the same but unfortunately that would be very hard as they are completely useless and clueless here. We will see though.

KA, yes it's a squeaking noise! That's exactly it. squeak, squeak, like a little mouse, except not so high pitches. Just sounds like that piece if squeaking all the time, especially on bumpy roads or the freeway.
Poison, good luck. Sucks to be out there!
