Question Help with chipped Black out front grille

Hey guys,

I recently painted my front grill Black Matte, however, the paint is starting to chip off, due to small rocks from highway driving...... I first sanded the grill, then put 2 coats of Rustoleum & clear finish..... Any ideas? Did I miss something? I know it was very cold out when I completed the work, perhaps it didn't dry enough???
Is aftermarket the only safe choice? I saw Lorinser, however that's $699

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.....

Thanks

This is why I didnt go with a black grill. Plus the chrome accents around the headlights and door trim match up with the standard silver grill.

Paint just does not adhere well to the grill surface plus it faces straight forward and is most prone to rock contact.

Dam!
So what options do I have now? Buy aftermarket? Will that be better? I remember on my M5 I bought an aftermarket front black grilled & never had any problems, and it was way cheap!

i don't get it, if it's just matt black, why not paint it again? And in theory, chips shouldn't do anything. under the chrome is black plastic. It's just chipping off the black paint and exposing the chrome?

odd, i did a few coats of rustoleum myself, and a matte clear coat. But never had any chipping issues. Oh, and like you said sanded grille before painting.

i would just try spot painting the chips.

That's definitely the cheapest and easiest way. or you can get a new grill. they have them on ebay and on these forums for less than $800. :-)

You might want to check out the Lorinser, click the British flag, they have a catalog under the W212 section .

Before you buy a replacement grill, try Duplicolor Shadow. I Just bought some and its supposed to be great stuff. Two part process but is specifically designed for to paint over chrome, plastic chrome and metal chrome. You'll have to resand it again and be pretty thorough, but I hear this stuff is specifically made to keep from chipping.

maybe try wrapping it in black vinyl if possible, its definitely less prone to rock chips than paint

Probably just gotta repaint it.

I considered the black grille too, but decided that I just love the chrome too much. Also, this grille seems to catch a lot of road debris, and mine already has tiny dings all over it, which you can only see up close. So I'll probably save myself some extra headaches, lol.
