Why not 295/30- 19s.....

so after 15000 miles i shall finally be changing my tires. I think the Pzeros have been pretty good overall, but i am curious about Pilot supersports.

As they dont come in 285/30s, the other option is 295/30s while keeping my 19 inch wheels.

I checked out a tire calculator and noted that bone stock the front 255/35s are taller than the rear 285s......so first question why did mercs put a taller tire in the fronts? Is there a performance advantage to that???

And when comparing the 295 vs the 285's , the 295s are closer in size to the fronts 255s than the 285s are.

Stats are.
255 285 295
Overall diam... 661.1mm 653.6mm 659.6mm
Sidewall ht 89.25 85.50 88.5
circumference 81.77 inch 80.84inch 81.57inch

I was thinking 295's with PSS as well.. but it looks like 295 require 10" wheels.

I just took off the P Zeros and went with 295s pilot super sport on the stock wheels and I am happy with it. Car sticks better and I saved $300 on the set instead of going back with the P Zeros.

Stock rim is 9.5 inches wide therefore 295 section tire wont fit properly. You need a 10 inch wide rim at least for proper fitment

On that tire calculator I posted it says that the wheel needs to be a 10-11 inch. But obviously we use a 9.5. So there must be some give and take

You can mount it...some shops may not want to for legal liability purposes if they follow the tire sizing charts strictly.

Mounting too wide a tire may have a bulging effect on the sidewall and may have an effect on understeer. If you're mainly driving on the street, then you may not care about either.

Yes, it will cause the sidewall to flex quite a bit with an under-sized rim like what sikm3 had mentioned. Or you can get a set of rear oem 18" like mine since PSS has the size for them.

I'm no tire expert but I read an article re the upcoming 2014 E63 which stated that the 2014 will run 255/35/19 & 285/30/19 Michelin Super Sports (I can't remember which article it was). As soon as they're on the 2014s they'll be available for us as replacement tires. I've got 13k on my Conti's and should be able to wait a couple of months.

Okay, I've posted the following on the CLS side but here is more appropriate for the question I have at the end:

It's rather strange that MB went with 9.5" on the rear oem rims for the E when they should have just made it 10" like the CLS. The oem MB setup seems to have the oem rim around an inch smaller than oem section width for the C and CLS, but that's not the case for E's rear.

Does anyone know why MB went with the 9.5" rear for the E? Otherwise, the CLS and E are idential mechanically other than perhaps a lower center of gravity for the CLS.

The rear CLS63's oem wheels are 10", even the offset is different at 2.05". The offset for the E63's rear is 1.85". Thus can't really just swap the wheels from the CLS63. The front offset for both the CLS and E are the same.

Stock E is 9.5

295s will increase understeer but you don't drive it very hard around any turns so you should be ok.

I think he is referring to the CLS55. Check the pdf owner's manual on the MBUSA site for the specs. I was quite surprised myself a few month ago when someone told me that on the forum.

That defeats the purpose of having a performance car. LOL

All AMG wheels are 9.5 unless you have 030, which is 10"

i dont think that was the case with the 212 and 218 models,
as the forged wheel option was a seperate option that the pp, for instance my car has PP but i wanted one with the 10 spoke wheels, where as others dont have the PP but get the forged.
