Tuned M157's...check in please!

With a bit of time behind us now with the M157 engine and available tunes, I thought it might be a good idea to check in and see how everyone's cars are handling the extra power.

For those who vote and have experienced issues, please share details (mileage w/ tune, specific problems experienced, resolution if any) if you're comfortable doing so.

Thanks!

Great thread. I'm anxious to hear everyone chime in. I know it will help me make a final decision. Right now I'm leaning towards Kleemann.

I was considering Kleemann this time around too (had Renntech on my last 2012 E63), just because their results have always been so phenomenal on my C63's.

Yep, deal on a new leftover 13 E63 was just too good to pass up. That and straight line power of the E just so intoxicating!

It was little scary because I had my 5 month old son in the backseat. I pulled over removed the ecu with the tune and threw in the second ecu with the stock tune and everything was fine till next day after the cel came on. Everyday they find something new, car has been at the dealer for 3 days. Anyone had similar problems?
The above quote is referencing a Renntech tune and it's not the first time we've seen these reports. I know you "pay to play" but this is the reason I'm still stock. As much as I want to bump my car's performance, I don't need these type of headaches. I want a seamless tune that does not cause inadvertent collateral damage. My dealer is a Renntech distributor and they've been pushing their products but I'm not convinced that they have the M157 figured out. I have not heard about any problems with Kleemann's tune but I only know a couple of people using it. Interested to hear others experience.

The quote was posted by me. I can tell you one thing that after you tune the car you see such a bump in power that is addictive and you dont want to go back to stock no matter what. I did about 12k miles on the tune, hard miles, and after a while I guess parts will break down.

No matter what tune you go with car originally is designed for certain amount of horsepower and its parts. And if you tune it the liabilty of it its not the same and things go bad after a while.

Would be nice if tuners would chime in and tell us few things. Weistec has turbo upgrades for a while in their E63. There are a couple of CLS63's with turbo upgrades that are members in the forum that could tell us if there are any issues. My guess is that with the tunes we are running the engine is maxed out and at some point things will go south, hell even AMG upgraded cooling on the 2013+ M157's (I guess for a reason). One thing I was told when I got my tune was that I must upgrade spark plugs...everything else was told will be fine (don't know for how long).

Good luck with getting a tuner to chime in... if they did then this board (its members) would help them accountable for everything under the sun that goes wrong. If I was a tuner I wouldnt give my 2 cents here.

But I am not a tuner so here is my take: of course pay to play has to be considered but reliability and failure rate along with r&d has to hold a heavy role. One thing I always do is choose a tuner local to me and fortunately Im in the OC so I have a good choice. Some tuners sell their products by posting (not saying any one tuner in particular) with heavy gains but at what cost? Our cars are engineered masterfully but if one small item is not perfectly aligned the whole dash board can light up. Tuning can lead to this or it can just happen on its own. I ran an original safe (not hp/tq blazing numbers) back in 2011 on my CLS63TT and then in Feb of 2012 on my E63TT wagon with OE tuning- I ran them hard and both are gone now with no issues before selling. But again the tune was more in line with conservative gains and not the amazing 100 hp plus gains coupled with 150 lb ft of tq.

I guess that is why Renntech put out this new intermediate tune... I will be asking my tuner to tweak my tune in very near future...Just as you said reliability and failure rate is very important to me.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback so far. At this point, I'm leaning toward going with the Renntech Intermediate Tune. Might be a good compromise of power and realiability.

E63 Biturbo
MHP for 6 months with no issues, plus their full 3" exhaust. They also have quite a few M157s on video seen in the 218 forum doing very well with no issues including MLs, CLSs, Es. They have their own 2012 E63 which has the stock turbo 60-130 record 7.35 seconds and have a 2014 G63 on order. I have pano roof and am a bigger guy at 270lbs so my E63 is 1-2 cars back of their E63 but that was before plugs from 50-130mph or so.

I just installed the cooler NGK plugs last week and didnt really notice any difference but more for peace of mind I guess. I havent had the chance to dyno due to work but when I do I expect the same numbers they have based on the racing outcome. For stock turbos and no warranty voided the gains are huge.

Thinking about turbo upgrades now but want to see some miles and numbers from a guinea pig of two first

Renntech E63S
Renntech sounds like they are very much willing to work with their individual customers on this issue, no problem. that said, they are publicly taking a "what issue?" stance on this matter of misfires, for obvious reason.

i think this motor makes quite a bit of heat. that's my take. the Renntech tune is not outrageously aggressive, nor is it particularly stressful on the motor. however, it's likely that the tune might be introducing a bit more heat into the mix at lower RPM, which might be breaking down cheap plastic bits like the coils. The Renntech tune brings on the increased boost that the Performance Package cars have a bit sooner, and holds on to it a bit longer through the rev range the the factory tune. not a huge deal, and probably not bad for the motor...but...it generates serious heat.

i'm not a mechanic, so i could be entirely full of ****.

All I can say about Renntech they always been very helpfull and know how to take care of their customers. Any issues, questions they respond right away and not like some other companies that only take your money and leave you dry out there if any issues come up.

How much was the MHP tune? Any idea on quarter mile figures on that tune with a stock 2012 E63 Amg? I'd just be happy being in the mid 11's quarter mile, that way I won't be stressing things out too much and still have a real fast car. I do worry about the warrantee though as my car still has 2 years left. What HP increase is this tune suppose to be good for?

the SL63 and cl63s i believe come with more power and torque than even some of our PP cars, it would be interesting to know what parameters amg uses t o boost those powers while keeping everything safe under the hood

Yes, the SL63 PP M157 comes with 560hp/660trq, so I think the aggressiveness of a particular tune compared to factory threshold should really be made to those figures. Given the Renntech Intermediate Tune makes about 640hp/660trq, it doesn't seem like they're pushing the envelope very far. That may be the tune for me.

I am torn as well. I am about to pull the plug on Renntech and wondering why they have come up with that intermediary tune.
Other than the price difference, the hp difference is not that substantial.
