BMW M5 vs E63 AMGs

I am trying to decide between a 2014 BMW M5 with the competition package or an E63 AMGs. It has been a while since I had driven the 2014 E63 a dealer had on the lot. I drove an M5 the other day and it seemed that the shifts in manual mode were "crisper" then the E63. Am I remembering right? Can anyone comment on the shifting of the 2014 E63 in manual mode? Thank you in advance.

You are feeling the effects of the DCT vs the MCT. I dont know the 2014 E63 in manual mode but the same tranny was in my C63BS, CLS63, E63, and E63 wagon. The manual shifting of the MCT pales in comparo to the DCT in speed and smoothness. I have 3 BMW DCT's and the software for the dual clutch system is quite good. I would only say the PDK in the PCar (I have had 2) is better based on shift feel and aggressive behavior. My GTR was not as good.

As for the cars itself I can agree with the editors to some extent that the lighter F10 M5 feels heavier and is more numb with his steering feel and chassis response. I think Benz has really bridged the gap in driver feel with the W212 chassis along with the steel front springs. I still think the suspension needs some more tweaks with the airmatic in the back but the E63 with AWD is a formidable beast. 540 AWHP is scary (based onthe video).

I remember you saying something about having friends that were testing out a beta MCT tune that gave them much better shifting results. Anything ever come out of that??

hummmmmmmmm was that me? I think it was a beta DCT tune for the M5 which I ended up getting. I dont think Ive heard of one for the MCT. One thing I do love about the MCT is its ability to handle incredible amounts of tq via mods.

2016 G63 AMG
Coming from a very long time BMW M driver and now an E63 owner, go with the E63. I gave BMW more than one chance to make the tranny perfect and I should have switched to an AMG 3 years ago. Although no tranny is perfect, the rest of the car just kills the M5. It was such an easy decision for me because I just liked everything about the Benz more. The sound, the front end, the navi, the lights, the interior, and of course...the tranny

no but seriously, i guess it is a little unfair in some respect as the mercs is a 4wd, but then again....thats too bad for the bimmer, they dont offer it and thats not our problem

what i dont think i understood was with dyno numbers.....for instance my car on a dyno jet put down 501/540 to the wheels and ive seen alot of m5's put down around 530/500 to the wheels on the same dyno

the numbers MT was getting for the mercs were enormous compared to mine, and i know every dyno is different, conditions etc etc but i was really impressed as to what mercs has done with the current model

this may be why the various tuners are having trouble getting more power, as amgs has really topped it off well

now i wonder if should do a trade it for a amgS

Don't forget though the 2014 e63s has a different tune than our 2012's. I'm sure there is more boost and other factors that make the car have more power. We can pretty much get the same or more power with ours just with a simple tune. I've really thought about doing a Eurocharged tune on my car.

LOL- because the majority of the modders are here on the boards. But in the real world maybe only 10-20% of the E63's are modded if even that. If I find 10 E63TT's in Newport Beach, maybe 1 will have a tune.

But I agree with you- mod asap. I got an SL63TT Sunday and tuned it Tuesday. Who gives a ****e about break in;

cheap gas station pic...... my first vert and its awesome. AMG finally got it right with this car reducing weight and putting in the M157 engine. I got the PP car with 557hp and 664tq stock along with the special order AMG performance suspension which makes the ABC about as neutral as it gets even into hight speed turns. The car is so stable without the airmatic fluff I had in the CLS and multiple E's. The luxury inside is the best of any AMG's Ive ever had (8 total). The seats are incredible with 10 levels of lateral seat support, 10 levels of thigh support, dynamic lateral movement, and tons of other adjustments. I only ever would get a hard top vert and I think this is the best of the lot out there in hard top variations. It takes all of maybe 18 seconds to lower or raise the top and the wind levels at 150mph are basically nothing (at such speeds). I missed the M157 engine grunt and this car is so plug and play.

Of course Ill mod it (already dropped the ABC in the pic), tune, and wheels coming next week. So far so great!!!!!!!!!

The car felt strong prior to the tune and crazy after. I dont remember my E63 wagon or the CLS stock being as strong as this car stock. I went with OE, they are local and he has tuned all my cars for about 10 years now. I dont need the supreme max hp/tq tune just the good bump that the car should have up front.

I just dont keep the car(s) long enough--- and the gain on DP's is not significant enough for the mod IMHO. The tune on the M157 gets me to where I need to be; especially in a vert

Congrats! It looks great! Does this mean that one of the other cars is on its way out? If so, which is it? You really should just start a monthly newsletter to let the masses on here keep up with your car buying....

I think to tune under warranty is a major decision and nothing to be taken lightly. I plan on hanging onto my 2012 long term and have even debated on going with an extra 2 year warrantee but if I pay extra to buy that warrantee it makes absolutely no sense to do a tune. Then on the other hand I would like the car to be faster, 12 seconds in the quarter is not bad, but 11.5 sounds a lot more fun to me. What worries me too that with the tune I will be stressing the car a lot more and it won't hold up as good long term, so I may just accept the car as it is and enjoy it and have less worry's, life is too short, it would be one thing if I were Donald Trump or something but I'm not and only 55 years old and retired and I don't want to be a broke old man, lol and look back and think I wished I had done things differently rather than buy a new merc every couple of years or spent money on repairs a warranty may have covered.

vic nice job, yet again....HRE's ordered and in process i assume

so, just wondering, as you mentioned the market is soft for certain cars at times, with your high turnover of cars, how do you deal with such issues.....or does it just not matter

cheers

Its a mix of things--- getting the best deal and not caring since its a hobby and Im fortunate enough to endure depreciation.

But anyone who buys a car thinking its an investment financially is smoking major crack...

One has to have a lot of money to drive the sort of cars we do, but at least to me it's worth the extra money because I'm a perfectionist and I can't deal with el cheapo interiors and lot's of issues where the car lives at the dealer. I just love the way these cars drive too.
