Debating if it's worth it to trade my 2012 amg wagon for a 2014 amg wagon?

I can get a 2014 wagon off the lot. The good things are of course the awd vs 2wd and the adaptive cruise which steers the car is pretty cool too. I do like the dash better on the 2014's without that big clock on the left side like my 2012 has and the little clock in the middle, makes the dash look more well balanced. I figure it's gonna set me back at least another 35 grand maybe more depending on how greedy the dealer is? I think I'd be lucky to get 70 grand for my car with 20K miles on it maybe less and the new one has a sticker of 111K so I'm figuring 105K min. I dunno if it's worth it? The warrantee on my car runs out in 20 months, thought about getting a extended warrantee that will run me around 3500 and be covered another 3 years or till 75K miles. I may even just do nothing and keep driving my car and let the warrantee expire in a couple of years. I figure how likely is a turbo to go as I maintain the car well and if a suspension pump goes it's not too big a deal. What would you do if in my situation? I hate to throw money around too much as ya never know what the future brings, but then again with a new one I'd be all set for many years to come and I have the feeling the value of my 2012 is gonna start dropping real quick as I get closer and closer to having no warrantee.

Mate its basically the same car with new bumper and lights. Sure it looks fresh and has some new tech but it's the same drivetrain and the same drive and personally I would prefer 2wd over awd. If you have money to burn than go for it but if not keep your current ride something special about Rwd.

if you do not need/want the AWD, not worth it.
Go test drive it and see if you want it or not.

Thanks for the advice, a test drive might be worthwhile if they will let me drive the car. I am pretty happy with RWD and it does hook up pretty good and should be even better if I put the 295 tires on I'm thinking about. The other thing I'm concerned about is the 2014 car I was thinking about is white with a black int. I currently have a nice light gray interior which I really like and the Pallidium silver ext. Plus the car I have has been trouble free, just changed the diff oil and air filters and maintain it well. It would be just my luck to trade in the car I've got and get a lemon that was always in the shop.

The chance you will get a lemon is very low.
Love the color combo you currently have. The new one looks like very plain.
The black interior I have always shows dirts very easily.
If they let you drive the car and give you a very very good deal, I maybe tempted.
But not very likely.

The 2014 also weighs more.
The 4matic is one more thing to go wrong.
I already cover the brake using adaptive... no way Im getting much out of the steering.
The 2014 front end looks MUCH less stealth, even as a wagon.

I just can't reason how the new one is worth $35k more plus all the hassles of selling and buying.

I just made the choice without the hassles a month ago and went for the 2012 after realizing it has much better traction than I expected for 590ft/lb and 285 rear tires.

Yes, I do love my 2012 and it will become more and more of a rarity as there not too many made. Ya, the 2014 does look more flashy on the nose but I think the 2012 looks more distinguished and classic Mercedes, theres probably a lot of people that want that look. The car does not turn heads like my CTS-V did, but it drives so much better and far nicer interior and build quality. This is a long term keeper. I think I'm going to pass on the extended warranty and take my chances, it's around 3500 bucks. I feel like I'm not going to have many problems with this car, hopefully I'm right.

Couple things as I read:
- I personally wouldn't own an AMG out of warranty. It's a peace of mind thing and it's priceless. Something goes wrong, not my problem. Loaner, fixed, back again w no risks. Worry free.

- It's tough to ask q's on the forum sometimes bc people who own the current car are somewhat biased...or can be at least. Every time a new model comes out you have the purists that say its not as good...then as time passes those some folks buy in. Bottom line - biggest diff is awd. If that, plus the appeal of the new body/interior etc is enough to jump, do it, you won't regret it certainly.

I think it's going to be a good bit more that $35K to move from a '12 to '14.

AWD is the appeal for the '14's. Either you want/need it, or you don't.

Owning an AMG out of warranty is a great way to put your wallet in peril.

Every time a new model comes out you have the new buyers that say its super good...but maybe not what you really need. Bottom line - biggest diff is awd. You need it or you may not like it. do it, the 14 is amazing. i have the sedan and love it. your value will drop once these 14 wagons start becoming readily available, at least your in a 2012 which has already taken a hit, vs a 13 which are heavily discounted right now. Its definitely worth a test drive though, i love the new interior, rims, red calipers, leather dash all that stuff, and the look is more aggressive! keep us updated

I think I'll call the dealer tomorrow and maybe get a look or test drive of the car and go from there. I bought mine used just last summer with 12K miles on it and now 20K miles so I'm not going to take too much of a hit if I get rid of it now. The original owner I'm sure took at least a 30K hit and I'll take at most a 10K hit, but it's been fun driving the car since June and then the new AWD drive one I could get the extended warrantee on that and have that be my long term keeper. What more could one ask for than one of the new AWD drive cars, they are pretty much the ultimate car. It does look more sporty than my 12 too. I am still up in the air though, anyway you cut it an extra 35 K or more is a lot of extra to put down and I can live without the AWD as I'm in Fla winters. I did a full throttle start on a back road a couple nights ago and the traction control kicked on and the car really hesitated to avoid spinning the tires, I thought wow, if only I had the AWD that ain't gonna happen. Either that or you turn the traction control off and practice but that's so easy to be inconsistent with starts off the line as the rear tires vaporize fairly easy with all that power, especially under varying pavement conditions and temperatures.

yeah it takes a little more to get the awd to spin wheels, but still awesome to drive through the corners. If you keep yours, you can always tune it! Maybe wait a little and look for a used wagon?? im sure they are rare though, as most people spec the sedans. I personally have a huge respect for the wagon, its bad*ss

I stopped by the dealer today. Turns out the white wagon I was seeing for sale on the internet @ Pembroke pines is really not for sale, not really sure why they have it listed on autotrader. Anyhow talked with the sales guy for a while, really nice guy. To trade in my 2012 for a 2014 would probably set me back at least 40 to 45 grand, no sense in taking that kind of a hit whereas I just got this 2012 last June and am quite happy with it, I guess I was dreaming thinking 25 or 30 grand. We actually did talk about the possibility of a tune, they can do either a Kleeman or a Renntech tune and he said the warranty would still be good whereas they are a authorized dealer, so that's a thought. With a tune my 2012 would beat a stock 2014, not off the line of course but once I was underway.

I think once underway the stock 2012 might beat a stock 2014. Less weight, less driveline drag, no giant fish-mouth front airscoops

You'd have to sell the 2012 privately and buy the 2014 from someone who wanted to make a deal for it to be worthwhile. Trading one in to a dealer for the other will always punch you in the wallet. The price for both cars will depend on how comfortable they are with a wagon sitting on their lot. You wont find a dealer happy to take yours but unhappy to have a 2014

I think the "warrantee preservation" of a dealer-installed tune isn't trustworthy. Sure, they want to make the money, but if your engine cratered itself, I have a terrible feeling they'd deny anything they told you once a District Service Manager denies the engine warrantee claim based on a modified PCM.

I don't have the $25k to replace an engine, even if its a "black swan" moment.

Yep your right, the most the dealers gonna give me for my car with 20K miles is 63 grand and the least they are gonna sell a ordered 2014 wagon for is 108K and by the time it came in next summer they'd be down to giving me 60 grand for my car, so I'd owe them 48 grand, not worth it. I think I will buy the 7 year 100000 mile warranty and be covered for another 3 years after the 2 years expires I currently have remaining. I think this car is a long term keeper, it pretty much does everything I want in a car. I think I can live without the tune, the car is plenty fast as it is.

Ordering a 14 wagon is an exercise in frustration and patience. I ordered mine in February amd was given production dates of August, September, December, and now late February. The (factory owned) dealer has been completely un-communicative and I only am told of the delay when I contact them. Discounts are slim to zip. I suspect there are none unsold ones at dealers in the US.

I'd bet that they are all sold. In my experience, the Autotrader and Cars.com listings are automatic and the cars are listed there unless the dealer has actively removed them. I'd be curious to know if any of them can be bought immediately.

One of those new wagons is listed at a local dealer who does not order for inventory. I'm sure it is pre-sold.

Yep, that's what it is from what I found, they automatically go on there even though they are sold, that was at least the case with the white one I found in Pembroke Pines Fl.

Your dealer can tell you with a quick Netstar scan and call to confirm if the car is presold or not.
