New memeber, just got an 14 E63

Hello,

I picked up a new to me E63 4matic yesterday and traded in my S4, I'm new to MB and don't know of any issues or possible quirks I should be looking out for. 14' is the first year of the 4matic E63s, so I'm wondering if there are any known issues or problems I should keep an eye out for.

thanks!

Congrats and welcome

The 2014+ platform is pretty trouble free so far, nothing terrible to report in terms of big items

If you hear a whistling while at 40+ mph there is a tsb for this and can easily be fixed

There is a recall that may or may not have been done: plastic shrouding in the engine bay needs a couple plastic clips .. A 4 minute job

How's it drive, what color and options?

Awesome, that's good to hear and thanks!
It's a base Obsidian black 14' AMG 4matic non S model, not sure on the exact trim levels/package names for MB but it has a couple options: blind spot monitoring, lane departure, top view rear view camera, nav, etc. and a couple others that I can't think off top of my head. Not sure how to add pics here either, I'm new to this forum.

Its incredible to drive, and the best part is hearing that V8 breathe and fire up on start. I'm coming from a catless, full exhaust stage 2 B8 S4, so I've been used to loud/aggressive sounding cars, this is just on a different level of sound.

Very nice, my next Benz will be obsidian ... I miss my obsidian e550 sedan

A $2k tune will take you to 700bhp and about 800lb-ft

I'm aware of some of the monster numbers tunes will put out on this car, but my plan is to keep it stock for as long as possible lol, or at least until the warranty period is up.

I wouldn't worry about the 4Matic system - while it was new to the E63 in 2014, it, and it's derivatives have been well used in MB vehicles.

I just had my grille replaced due to the highway whistling Peter mentioned, and had a noisy driveshaft replaced.

Overall, no serious issues - nothing that stranded the car. Just odd noises here and there that the dealer has been good at chasing down and repairing.

I would say that my biggest complaints are not about part failures, but about shortcomings of the vehicle itself - particularly the MCT's cold-temperature stuttering when pulling away from a stop at low throttle, and the awful throttle lag at low speed. Minor gripes, but ones that shouldn't exist.

Overall, a fantastic vehicle - the most enjoyable I have ever owned.

That's good to hear, I have heard a faint whistling noise at highway speeds butjust thought that comes with owning a twin turbo car. Also noticed slight lag at slow speeds around town in colder weather, just attributed that to turbo lag and coming from a supercharged car I expected there to be some slight throttle lag.

It isn't turbo lag - it just appears when first applying the throttle. If you get on the throttle lightly at first to start the car rolling, and then mash it, the car moves like a bat out of hell. It's just that initial application of the throttle that is a little frustrating.

A sprintbooster helped the throttle lag just a bit and now I leave it on all the time

The 4matic was paired with the ml63 for a few years before it ended up in the 2014+ e63s and cls63 and s63

It's just a shame you can't get the rwd as an option in the USA

nice... you'll have a bunch of fun for years to come with it. i don't think there's any actual physical difference between the S and non-S models in terms of the engine, after i see tuning companies post dyno results the numbers are always the same after the tune. one good thing the S gets is the LSD, and i think it actually has a slightly wider front track than the non-S. it also gives you red calipers and the amg illuminated door sills as standard.

and yes the throttle lag is a real let down, almost like the car has to send your throttle input to affalterbach for tobias moers to approve before the car gets going. after driving it for a bit you'll start to develop muscle memory of how to get around that stuff to some degree, but it'll still annoying how protective the car is of the MCT.

even using launch control you'd think it'd give you more of a kick but it still engages somewhat gradually. the thing absolutely rips though haha... not the kind of speed you get bored with very quickly. in fact i'd say the biggest problem with it is how it effectively ruins other cars for you for awhile. you'll get in and be like "no way it was this slow before" lol

Welcome. I came from a b7 rs4 full bolt on(JHM). I love my e63! Still breaking it in. Did 200 miles today. 800 to go and just picked her up today haha.

Also regarding the transmission, when in comfort mode and leaving from a red light or stop sign do you feel a slight vibration for a second when taking off normally? Is this the shutter other folks mentioned below?

it's not just in comfort mode, but yeah there will be shudder/judder feeling from the wet clutch engaging. i don't feel it as much now after like 12,000 miles as i did when it was still brand new but it'll still do it every so often.

i find it happens more when you accelerate away from a stop sign or something where you slow to like 3-4 mph but not quite a dead stop. from a complete stop its almost always very smooth, especially when starting in 2nd gear

I don't mean to thread Jack, but since this is a new car thread, is there anyway to increase the volume of the parking sensor monitoring system? I was backing up and noticed they don't make any noise but only show up as dots

They will only sound when you're about to hit something and you have a red dot in addition to all the orange ones lit up

No way to make that final sound louder

LOL
I've had it for a week now, and it's no doubt faster than my fbo stage 2 S4. The power comes on more gradually, but once in the power band it pulls like a freight train and so effortlessly. Incredible.

That is a sweet looking RS4. I haven't noticed any vibration leaving from comfort mode, if anything it's probably the start-stop feature turning the engine on every time.

I think the sound may also be heard if you rapidly approach an obstacle but still never get close enough to hit it (the red dot)
