W212 E63 price predictions? Looking for best time to buy
Hey guys,
Im wanting to figure out the optional time to hop into a W212. Currently have a 2005 E55, great condition and just under 80K but really wanting the facelifted M157. Ive been considering the 2012-2013 but i know that id want to sell it and get the facelifted model as soon as i have the chance, so in order to avoid all that, ill just wait for the 2014.
My question is, what do you guys anticipate the prices to look like? When is the 2017 E63 coming out? 2012-2013's are currently in the low $40's and 2014 and up are in the $60K range. What do you think the prices will be like next summer for example?

2019-2020 would be my guess, at least for one that is worth having. I bet 2018 you'll see them dip into that price but for cars that you wouldn't want because they'll be more of a headache with miles/stories that come with.

The answer would be a bit easier if this was a dedicated sports car or an SUV because SUV prices tend to go up in the winter and sports cars go down (just due to obvious traction reasons). Since you're looking at the 4matic? I'd imagine it's similar all year long.
Time is always on your side if you are buying a used AMG. I've never seen any cars depreciate quite as hard (and I'm not sure why honestly), but I guess that is great for the guys who buy used. I just assume these things lose about 10-15k a year, so figure for every month keep your current car, you're saving yourself 1k
So the earliest 4matic ones are JUST now coming off warranty and you already have lease returns etc., but in another year you'll start to really see these things cycling because a lot of guys fear the out of warranty AMG (as do aftermarket warranties apparently!). I'd wait another year minimum if you're trying to score a good deal and avoid some depreciation.

AJS76,
Thank you! This is great insight and I think i've made up my mind to wait until summer of 2018.
My E55 will depreciate as well and it'll be approachiing 90K miles, but i cant imagine it going down more than $2-3K, on the other hand, i think that the facelift E63's will be nearing the $40K mark at that point.
And i can definitely bite the bullet and go get one now, but im one of those guys that just cant stand the thought of wasting $20K just to have it a year or so early. I always wait to buy cars/watches when they have gone through that massive depreciation and that's when i step in. I think i knew the answer to my own question here but was looking for someone to reassure me that buying now is not the smartest financial move.

I'll tell you what I'd watch for (and I've done this a handful of times). You want to find a 2 owner car where the second owner got the car from a dealer as a CPO (assuming they even do this on AMGs?). Then buy that car when it has about 1-1.5 years of CPO warranty left on it. It means you can buy it without stressing over what might be broken that a mechanic didn't find since you have time to live with it and because of the age, you're giving it the best chance to fail on you. Final point, if it's a total lemon it won't be your cost and you can dump it on the next guy before it's out of pocket.
The "average" car loses 50% of its value in 4 years of life. Luxury cars tend to do worse than this because I think future buyers don't really value most of the options that original owners did.
I have to admit when I bought mine the dreams of cool tech features got me all hot and bothered, but the reality is I get in it and still drive it like my 2003 911 Turbo. haha. I never use Nav, turn off most of the safety electronics because they annoy me etc. So don't fall for the marketing hype

Flying not so sure. 10.2 second daily driver electric cars that drive them self unfortunately most likely 😕 And every soccer mom will be capable of running 10s

My 2014 has warranty for another 5 year, which will hold better value when most are coming off warranty.

That is subjective. Base e63s w212 should get in the price range next year. If its loaded with everything the it won't be $40k. Though at that time it will be out of warranty, thats why most AMGs drop in price because repairs can be costly without warranty.

its all about warranty and miles... you can find some 2014 E63S cars selling with high miles 70,000 for just below 50K. not many but a few are out there and considering the complexity of these cars and cost to repair out of warranty i would suggest looking for one with warranty.
here are some examples of what you can buy below 50k.... good luck would not touch myself unless i could repair myself

totally agree that warranty will hold better value.

These cars look so good, i cant get over it. And very tempting for the price, but i think i'll be aiming at something with roughly 40K miles and just out warranty. Hopefully there'll be some base packages with 40K miles for about $40K next summer.
PS - what is the difference between the base E63 and the E63S? From little reading ive done, its all just in the tune, is that true? If thats the case, mine will get an aftermarket tune within the first month anyway...
