high miles on a M157 Motor ?

Sorry for posting it here, but you guys have the most traffic

Looking at ML63 with the M157 engine, anyone with 100k miles on their motor ? anything to watch out for ?

Gonna use to tow a boat occasionally, about 6,000lbs....

Looking at a 2012 ML63 with 30k miles on it...

Thanks

Mike

You do know that the w205 C63 has the M178 engine right? These guys (unless they previously owned an M157 equipped car) will have zero clue. Better off checking an E63 forum. They probably have the most traffic on the forum for M157 info.

In Germany the M157 is pretty stable even at higher mileages. Known problems:

1. chain tensioners + check valves
2. variable camshaft adjusters (and sometimes even the camshaft itself)
3. some turbos tend to have problems with the wastegate linkage and/or high oil consumption.

thanks for the info, and apparently I should have done a little more homework

I didn't realize there where various versions of the 5.5 V8 turbo motor.

Will do some more home work tonight when I finish work

I'm up to 62k miles. So far so good. There was someone on here recently with 120k miles. I've seen some for sale posts for as high as 150k miles. While these make for possibly the best daily driver anyone could ask for, a lot of people do not use them for that. As a result, even though they are approaching 10 years old, there aren't that many over 100k miles that I know about. There seem to be plenty that will cross the threshold soon enough, as I'm seeing a fair amount for sale with 80k miles or 90k miles.

We're at 96k miles on our '13 GL63, and we drive the hell out of that car too (multiple road trips, snow driving, spirited jaunts between lights etc).

Only big repair was the engine wire harness (search the plethora of threads on this), worth a decent aftermarket warranty that would cover it. Ours covered $18k for that one...

Doesn't burn oil, I just installed wireless carplay to freshen up the electronics, and since I have a lift at home my plan is to keep running this car until it dies (we have 3 kids and a dog, and can all fit in a 550hp suv, it's perfect).

Knowing what we know now about the oil in the harness and keeping a eye out on it every oil change will go a long way and probably prevent this from occurring as much
