Change your Air Filters!

Hello, MBWorld community! I've been a member for a lil' bit now, but just recently picked up my very first MB. Very happy with it so far
This thread is really not meant to be a write up on "how to change your air filters"; there is enough info out there for that, just do a google search and you'll see. I actually simply wanted to share a few pics with the community for I was pretty blown away by how dirty the filters were at just 30K.

Where the heck did the previous owner live?! And surpisingly... the rest of the engine bay looks very clean... the only other place I see evidence of this sort of debris is in the driver's side cooler (bumper area). I guess I shouldn't wait 'til 40K to do the cabin filter
Anyhow, replaced with AFE dry units

Hope you guys and gals got a good laugh out of this as I did

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
Thanks for sharing those pics. Sure quite a bit of dirt in there. Maybe the previous owner went off-road a lot.

Looks like the air filters did a good job filtering

You'll also notice the dirt was all in one location. Its the filter not being 100% exposed that causes this. Look inside your airbox with the OEM filter inplace and you'll see about 50% of it is partially blocked. I installed AFE oiled filters and picked up almost 10 whp and 15wtq (on a dyno test). Then with UPD spacers the same gain again.

Yes! It also looked like the previous owner either lived in a wooded area or routinely threw shovel fulls of dirt at the front of this car! I have seriously never seen air filters this filthy before... ever!

Those spacers actually work?? Damn it! I should have gone with the Weistec ones then!!! They made theirs shorter so that they'd have the same effect as regular height filters w/ UPD spacers.

Regular height filters? You mean OEM height? The UPD would work better than the Weistec ones if the weistec ones are shorter. The OEM filter might be more than twice the thickness of the AFE or Green filters. I dyno'd my car stock, with AFE filters and with AFE filters and spacers. Each change brought gains. I also dyno'd AFE/spacers and Green/spacers. The AFE made a small bit more but negligible in the big picture.

Yes, I meant OEM filters. This is good to know. If I ever decide to go for more power, I will be sure to grab a set of them spacers. Thank you for the info

Contact AGE directly. That's what I did. They sell dry flow and oiled ones. The guy said the oiled flow better so it depends if you're looking for more power or ease of service.

I agree. I am not an engineer, but, that's why I chose to go with the dry ones. I'd think that oil in the filter would help trap more junk, but at the same time the oil would decrease air flow being that is one more element air has to get through. Just my thoughts.

Er - depends on the structure, density and material of the filter itself. Oiled could flow more air, "better" than dry.
