W211 or W212....what to do. Opinions please

Would love some thoughts on w211 or W212 purchase. In a sense, the question "what would you do if you were me..."

I drive a 2002 CLK55 wihch has been great but it's about time to get something newer and more powerful .

I'm eyeing E63's and have checked out a few 2007's and one 2010. Here is what I am weighing out.

I have seen some 2007's for $16k with < 80k miles on them. Most of the w212's (2010-11) are around $30k unless they have over 100k miles which I would like to avoid.

For purposes of this thread lets say 07-08's are $15-20k and 2011's $30-35k.

So, 2007-08 will be cheaper but there is the headbolt possibility, air struts, dated NAV (so I have read).

For a W212 I'd want a 2011 not affected by headbolt issue. Also, the W212's no longer have front air struts (only rear). I know there are Arnotts etc so this isn't a deal breaker but I feel it's something to consider.

I can come up with $15k to put down on a car so a 07-08 would bascailly be bought outright or darn close to it. A 2011 will get me 4-5 years of car payments. Not huge payments but still.

I am definitely someone who keeps my cars for a long time. I hope that to be the case with an E63. I have done a decent amount of repairs on my CLK and have a great Indy mechanic so not having a warrantly doesn't spook me that much.

One thing about the W212 is it felt like a huge leap in terms of a newer, more modern car. The updted intereior/dash/nav/backup camera etc. Also the transmission with the push park button etc.

Is it safe say the 2007-08 will be cheaper with maintenance -- even if I keep it for 7-8 years?

thanks

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
If I were you, I would go for a W212. Stick with a '11 without headbolt issue, and replace the rear with Arnotts when it conks out, and you will have a good solid car that will last you forever.

The W212 is obviously an upgrade when it comes to amenities and handling but I think the W211 was a much more solid platform from a build quality standpoint. At least my E55s were (I skipped over the W211 E63).

None. We dismantle them :)
I would say go with the W212. Hard to pass up on all of the upgrades, especially for the long term.

While both cars are upgrades from your 02 CLK55, why not go with the W212?

I have to agree with everyone here. I loved my W211 E500 but the S212 E63 is just a nicer all around car. The suspension is designed for better handling and that's a big plus to me.

i'd go w212, but im biased. i have had a 2010 E63 for almost 2 years now. 143,000 miles. no plans to get rid of it any time soon.

Thanks for all the replies. Seems like W212 is getting a lot of praise.

2014 E63s 1993 mazda rx7 on Boost
had an 08 e63 and now 212 e63

love them both. but if you are looking fro added power and thinking w211 then W211 E55 over the E63. not much you can do to the NA to make power easy.
but the W212 is an upgrade all around if you can wait maybe a W212 2012TT is the way to go.. You will be into the latest of the series upgrade.
my 08 had no issues what so every at 80k gas and go

As someone who just went through the same process I agree with all of the other comments. I was deciding between an 07-09 W211 or 2010-2011 W212. My initital plan was the W211 so I could just pay cash and be done, although, after researching them, checking them out in person, driving them, it was clear to see that the W212 was the way to go even if it did cost a bit more.
