2016 5.5L vs 2019 4.0L E63
Interested in hearing opinions on which model is preferred and why?
I like the body style of the 2016 vs 2019 especially the rear. I have a hard time telling the difference from a C class, E class & S class.
I love the digital instrument layout of the new models compared to the 2016

From a design perspective, I like the W212 E63s, from technology and power, W213 E63s. It’s been mentioned a few times the new W213 from behind looks like a C class, but to each of their own preference.
BTW. If you go with the W212, someone already took the big retail value hit for you vs W213 you’ll be hit with the value in the first 2 years of ownership.

On value alone, the w212 would win on depreciated values today... on a w212 forum, your going to get skewed answers. I LOVE the look of the w213 and w212, I dont "love" the space age-space ship interior on it... I like the freshness of the technology. I havent driven one yet, I imagine it performs better. I keep hearing and reading that the ride is more harsh than the w212, that alone would NOT do it for me, im looking for more everyday comfort and the w212 E63 about 85% does that for me.

I have both 212 and 213 . I prefer old one, it’s softer much better exhaust note, better cornering on high speed and for some reason I have lower fuel consumption on highway... Overall if I’m doing some races I prefer 212. On long journeys 213 is good just because of its multimedia system, massage seats..

For me....
212 exterior wins
213 tech and interior wins
212 reliability wins over already questionable 213 engine woes
213 trans and acceleration and launch wins
212 likely less harsh of a ride than 213

I am surprised you like the 213 interior over the 212. That is one of the biggest show stoppers for me for the 213. The rear tail lights too. Small displacement motor is third on my list for reasons to keep the 212. BTW, I drove a 2018 E300 for a bit while Eva1 was in the shop. So I had the 213 interior daily for about 2 months. Couldn't wait to get my car back.
I must say I was expecting less polite answers to this question as I've seen them before on other threads. Something about "pussified interior" as I recall! LMAO

The only 2 E-Class I like are W124 and W212. Interestingly, one of the early articles mentioned W124's visual design being used heavily during the designing of W212. As others have mentioned, C/E/S all look similar from a distance and I agree and dislike that. Being an analog gauges, I find no love for the tablet-based instrument clusters in W213. So visually of exterior and interior, my vote goes to W212. In terms of technology and all those amenities, I'm sure W213 wins even though I have never driven one. However, IMO W212 wins over W212 in the engine sound department, whether it is 6.2 or 5.5 but especially with the 6.2. Drivers of W213 must remember that part of the aural senses is actually fed through the speakers...that's a major turn-off for me. When I'm driving, I'm entertained by the sound of the motor and exhaust, the feel of the steering wheel, the ways pedals feels, etc, so all those other tech-gadgets are not important to me; I couldn't care less if it has an audio system or not...I'm that kind of person.

The W213 does NOT have the tablet screen, the Mercedes SUV and C class does however. I love my 2017 S63 full ( almost from center to driver side ) digital display like the W213. It is my own opinion that the technology is way ahead of the W212, the 9 speed transmission, 4.0tt with performance exhaust sound is awesome. I do however like the body of the W212 vs W213.

IMHO the interior of W212 is a lot higher quality if compared to W213.
Less plastic parts, higher quality materials all around, smaller gaps between the interior parts, panels and trim - just tighter overall.
Never had a chance to drive the E63 but had W213 E300 loaner for about 3 weeks and it felt really cheap and "hollow"

You know what, I quite like the M157. I think the exhaust note is better. Given the decision between W212 and W213 I think it is possible to daily drive both for couple of years and be happy with either. W212 is 50% price of the W213 but the feeling and value you get is 8/10 or even 9/10 of the W213.

Ha. I had an E300 W213 loaner for about 2 months (because it takes MB that long to simply get a muffler assembly out of Stuttgart! OMG) and I felt the same way, cheap and I just didn't like how it seemed too opened up. It didn't give you the "cockpit" feeling you get in the W212. Just didn't seem racy at all.

I was only referring to the overly spacious and open feeling of the interior general architecture. Nothing else. Even with the assumed nicer materials in the W213 E63 over the E300, the general layout of the interior is comparable. It’s just not for me. That’s all. Not trying to offend anyone. Truth is that if you are fortunate enough to own either a W212 or W213, you are living a decent life!!!!

I'm glad to hear some others share the same opinion I do about the w213 interior. Don't get me wrong, I love technology but you have to make it user friendly. I've had a few e300/400 loaners and have test driven the w213 E63s and I just can't get comfortable with it. Give me some hard buttons! And I really detest the new hockey puck with the touch sensitive pad over it. I'm sure I could learn to live with it, but I just think they missed the mark.
I was able to see the new interior on the AMG GT 4-door and they have revised it somewhat thankfully. Unfortunately I have to admit that the BMW Idrive system is much more intuitive. And faster.
