Advice on buying W212

Mercedes Chicago has a 2011 E63 W212 with the 6.2L V8. I onwed 2010 C63 naturally aspirated and 2015 C63s biturbo. Even though biturbo was faster I think 6.2L felt more fun without the turbo lag.

For those of you more familiar with E63, would you choose:

W212 6.2L
W212 biturbo
W213 biturbo

I’d especially be interested to hear from anyone who has owned or driven both (or all 3) platforms.

Thanks!

I personally love the 6.2, but chose not to purchase one due to reliability concerns.

I cant expertly differentiate your other 2 options, though.

The nerd herd electronic gauges soft pussified, rear end 4.0 liter filled to the trim for geeks dweebs technology e63samg.
That soft rear end, and includes that hideous iPad glued to the dash.
Not a monster aggressive look like the w212E63S
The new E63S W213 interior is a Louis Vuitton purse with a nerd haven of gadgets and tailored to those who need the technology the nerd-herd instead of just a car. Besides looking like a pussified, smaller version of an S.
The W212 E63S' 5.5L biturbo V8. Pound for pound they're the best overall luxury sedan built for speed, performance, balance, handling, occupants, styling and class.

2018 E63S
I owned a 2014 e63s for about three years, and have had my 2018 for over 1 year . Never owned a mb with the m156, but did drive a w204 with a supercharged m156....now i understand why people love the motor, and supercharged it's an absolute animal.

What info are you looking for?

As the dude above me clearly demonstrates, looks are subjective, so that's on you. If you plan to keep the car stock, the w213 is much faster/quicker. Modded, they all get pretty fast, and to similar levels. Handling, no comparison, the w213 feels best in that area. Tech, of course the newest car has the most current tech, but I never felt like my w212 lacked tech. Driving experience...all will likely give you the feelings you are looking for. These cars are all now at very different price points, that's also on you to decide how much money you want to spend on a toy, cuz that's what these things are in my mind. Warranties arent super fun, but something to think about...consider which ones have warranties or not, if that's a thing for ya. Regarding looks, properly sized wheels/tires really firm up the look on any of these options.
The motors, prob safe to say they are all pretty awesome. Transmissions, w213 hands down...many people will tell you it feels the same as the w212, but I disagree there. Its silky smooth and cranks out shifts really quickly. Whether the changes from w212 to w213 , beyond the additional gears, are software only (internet says so) or not, it's a big improvement in feel, smoothness, quickness, directness, etc. Ride, I'm not the best to evaluate this one, as it's not something I really care about....I imagine they are roughly equivalent. My 212 had larger wheels and was lowered, same with w213.

i've had a m156 and m157 now.
m157 is faster but m156 was more fun and playful.
i never knew what reviewers and owners meant when they used words like that until owning both sequentially. the m156 would make me laugh, the sound was so ridiculous. the m157 sometimes scares me with the amount of torque.
the w213 I have no experience with but I prefer the chiselled looks of the 212 vs melted soap bar. that trunk opening looks too narrow.

Agree, melted soap frog looking end, soft. The m157 MY 2016 E63S is the last big block true beast of its kind sedan that can beat out exotics.

I had a 2011 M156 for about 3-1/2 years before my 2015 M157.

Honestly, the only thing I found better about the M156 was the exhaust sound and maybe the front end. That bigger motor just sounded great. Everything performance wise seems better in the AWD M157. At least to me it does. The gas mileage in the M157 is noticeably better as well. The M156 was a gas pig.

I did really love the front end of the 2011. It looked more like a race car in my opinion. However, my newer face-lifted 2015 has really grown on me and I quite like it now.

E-Class
M156 and its thunder bolt clapping exhaust!!! But thats about it for the m156. It fits really well in a C63, but was so so under powered in the bigger sedans. I had the m156 in a c63 and s63. Loved the rumble and in 2008, the m156 was the best thing out of the S-class besides V12. I liked the later versions of the M157, higher outputs, felt more mature and it IS more powerful. It retained a nice rumble but toned down compared to the 6.2 but it idles manly compared to the 4.0. With that said... the 4.0 pushes me into my seat more than the 5.5. If you are concerned with turbo lag, install a sprint booster or similar products. I was impressed with the product but decided against it as it promoted a heavier right foot.

I would go with the M157, M156 feels too dated and underwhelming in e-class and above vehicle size. W213 folks and even some W222 M177 engines throwing CEL with dealers running around lost and confused. My s63 even had a hiccup a few times but no CEL and no problems yet with 8k miles 1 year ownership. Body styling thats up to you to decide. I never liked the 213 body.

w212E63S because I hate the newer dashes. I don't know what I'm going to do when this warranty expires and every new car has a stupid tablet for a dash. I might have to fix this one forever.
