Speed limiter - what actually is it? 175 or 186 mph

Theoretical question- I always thought the W212 E63 was limited to either 155 mph / 250 kph or 186 mph / 300 kph. The former for the non "S" and the latter for the "S".
However - in my '16 the limit seems to be 175 mph.

I know the speedo may not be 100%, but that's off the "wrong" way by 10 mph (which I think is HIGHLY unlikely) or 20 mph the "normal" way (which I also think is unlikely, 13% error). Checking the speedo against GPS speed (on radar detector) shows less than 1 mph off in speeds up to 100 mph.

Confused.

175 is the highest I have seen in my 2016 Sedan. That being said, I was starting to run out of room - so did not have the luxury of waiting to see if it would still climb.

Dry lake bed called El Mirage in Southern California. You can get a permit for the day and no speed limit as long as you obey the rules.

Interesting. so there seems to be a spread then. At 175 I definitely felt the car stop accelerating. It was quite obvious.

Am I reading this correct? 218 mph in an E63 AMG?

How youre gonna do 188 with a stock ecu if vmax for S model is 186? Electronically limited at 186, for the US market at least.

I have a picture but the speedo reads more than 186. We would need to do these runs with a GPS unit to get an accurate reading.

I see, its just i thought the ecu uses the value provided by the speed sensor(not gps based) to determine when to cut-off power. Reason for asking.

It 100% does,.
However - it also uses the GPS sensor as a sanity check - which is how they can detect if you are on a dyno.

Wow - 218 mph, that 350 kph. Very, very few cars get there. And it requires goobs of horsepower.....
Not saying you did not see 218 on the speedo. Any chance you changed the gearing? Or put on aftermarket wheels?

So it's pretty clear - I'm not crazy. For some reason some cars are limited at 186, some are at 175.
Interesting, wonder why?
I thought for a second that maybe because I'm a wagon I get 175. But you have a 2016 sedan. Same year, same limiter.

Gearing is stock, wheels were stock as well..I do have a set of 20inch Rohanas but never went over 140-150...just dont trust them as much as I do with the stock ones.

In the old days there was <5% error rule, but with electronic speedometers it's a matter of what is programmed in as the error. Most tests today show they are very accurate, usually less than 2 kph (so about 1 mph) and constant.

In my case I used the GPS on the radar detector to check the speed at lower speeds and it's dead on, zero error.
