New Pads/Rotors - front clicking sound on initial brake press??
Had new brembo front rotors and ebc red pads installed (and rears done) couple weeks ago (see thread below for those details) and for some reason I'm getting a strange clicking/clunk sound from the front brakes that *only* occurs on the initial brake pressing after going from reverse to drive.
Example: am parked, put car in reverse and first brake press the front click/clunk sound happens and then right after when going from reverse to drive (at 1-2 mph) the first press of the brakes again makes the front end click/clunk sound.
The noise doesnt return while staying in drive on using the brake repeatedly and the brakes perform fantastic. the noise only only happens in the Reverse to Drive process and when the initial touch of the brakes happens as you go from reverse (foot on brake, then initial click/clunk sound) to drive (foot to brake and initial click/clunk) then it doesnt return while in drive until you go through reverse to drive again.
Any ideas what is going on? THose with EBC reds, is that normal for those pads?? I dont get the noise in the rears which are EBC reds and zimmerman rotors.
Here's the brake setup i have - https://mbworld.org/forums/w212-amg/...rs-dealer.html

Your pads are slipping and Acura's and Honda's do this a lot ... of sure if the ebc pads are a bit small...
When this happened with my Acura I took it back to them they re-installed the front pads and the problem went away.

No, it's quite safe ... just a nuisance; it'll be fixed just take it back to the Indy; there is like a couple millimeters of play in the caliper and the brake keeps shifting with the first drive/reverse momentum

Happens quite often and is 100% safe. It's sometimes just the fact that there is a sliver of lateral play as well, and the disc push the pad into the piston when you go forward&reverse. Mine does exactly the same, running Hawk 5.0.
Annoying? Maybe a tiny, tiny bit. Worth it for better brake modulation and 80% dust reduction? You bet!

In my Acura case they added a shim and it was flawless

What he said. Even though it's rarely "a couple", usually less than that. But agree 100%

FastWgn / Peter - thanks gents for the input as I was freaking out a bit that something was wrong with them since i've never used EBC red pads before. Will have my indy guy (who's a MB master tech) take a look and prob put a shim in as Peter mentioned. happy fathers day to you fellas.

My EBC reds make a bit of click when changing direction of travel, however, it is not a clunk as you describe. It is not very loud, so I just ignore it. I'm sure though that it is caused by the pad not quite fitting as snugly as it should in the caliper body. I suspect a shim would cure it completely.

Did you add a shim and have the sound stop, or do you just live with it as is?

Sorry to revive this old thread. I realize I don't have an AMG W212, but I have this problem with both my 300TE and my 300SL, and I find it to be quote annoying!
@PeterUbers, @jvakos, and @HPMan....these shims you are talking about, are they on the backing plate of the pads that touch the pistons of the brake calipers or are they shims are placed between the outside edges/rims of the brake pad backing plate so they fit snugly into the brake caliper cradle? I would love to know that the solution looks like so I can go searching. Was also wondering if the retaining springs that hold the pads in the caliper can be adjusted or bent to hold the pad more firmly. Thanks for the help!

You need shims
