My hard choice..05-6 CL65 or 12' E63..thoughts

Been 2 years since I parted w/ my 06' E55 and the bug is back. I am looking for power, this would be a toy driven under 3k/year. I own an Indy repair shop (Subaru Specialist but that doesn't matter) so I can spin the wrenches even w/ the pita ABC suspension. Short of some "tunes" I'm not seeing a lot of support for the v12 cars unless your willing to drop crazy coin which I am not. I know the V12 can be a monster on the higher top-end however where I live, just not realistic. Has anyone owned a CL or SL65 w/ a solid tune (EC...etc) then moved to a 12'-14' E63? Would LOVE to hear your feedback.
I like the exterior of the old boat W215 chassis (not the dated interior so much). Thanks

The 65 is such a needy engine .... the m157 will keep you happier with less maintenance and less problems

Going w/ the 65...Guess I am a bit older and that 05-06 CL style in my eyes is just iconic....along w/ the insane V12. I know there needy however I spin wrenches for a living and this car will live in a heated garage and get used maybe 2000 miles/year. (currently drive an older N54 bimmer as a DD...so let's just say I am VERY fluent w/ tearing deep into German cars...U want to talk about a problem car...)

Bottom end of the v12 not as robust as you know compared to the ttv8; the v12 is way smoother than the v8 but stock for stock the v8 seemed to outperform the v12 by a bit

The M157 is a very solid platform, it will out perform the V12 any day when comparing a tuned to tuned motor.
also the CL interior is dated and the tranny is slow

The 65 has ABC which is a pain. That alone, I would go with the 63. The only engine issues I've ever had on the V12 was a leaking turbo seal and a set of coil packs. Other than that, the engines are rock sold and produce copious low end torque. Probably due to the small turbos that produce max boost very low in the rpm range. The tranny sucks in the 65 vs 63. Engine mods, 63 has it due to ease of modification and readily available parts. There are some very mean V12's out there but they are expensive to mod since everything will be custom.

I recently sold my Speedriven modified V12 and I will miss the power, smoothness of the engine, and the symphony it produces while on full throttle. In my opinion, the M157 doesn't hold a candle to the sound of the bi-turbo V12's but that doesn't mean I would recommend it over the 63.

V12s are $ to mod M157 modern easier to get more HP than a V12

Now the 12 will have a better sound and well the old skool factor. I have a 03 V12 NA parked. suspension CL 600.
I guess get what ever make you smile, for me its a Buick GN :-)

That’s interesting, the person that did all the fab work on my grand national is actually willing to fab me up some downpipe’s for the CL, then I was going to take it somewhere and have a custom dino tuned versus the canned tunes… What kind of power were you throwing down with your speed driven package

The 65 had a 5 speed due to all the torque ... they couldn't make a 7 speed for it to handle that power

Did not dyno but based on what everyone else got with similar mods should have been north of 600 RWHP. I've heard some using the newer 65 turbos getting north of 700 RWHP on pump gas. Mine had Black Series injectors, downpipes, intercoolers, trunk tank, 300 cell cats, full custom exhaust/no mufflers, Speedriven no torque limit on tranny, and OE Tuning tune. Made my 157 feel like a slug with no torque.

Can I ask why you settled with OE for your tuning? I've used Eurocharged in the past for my E55, no complaints...just wondering. My plan is to upgrade the IC pump to the Mezeire, catless DP's..that's about it. Is OE possibly better w/ the DP upgrade? There is a person in CT that will Tune on a Dyno however I am not after every last inch of power so OE may be a better solution for the DP's? Thanks
I know the 5.5 TT is a fantastic engine but there's just something about the front end and styling of the old W215 I can't get over...and the V12 fender badges...well.... Just beautiful, like my old 87' GN, just love perfection even if it comes with headache (GN's are Headache!)

Previous owner had it tuned. They may have more experience with custom tuning on the V12, not sure. The car also had two intercooler pumps. One in the trunk and one up front.

65 will cost more in upkeep than the 63. I prefer 63 sound over 65 sound except for the starter noise. Power wise both will be similar on the street with proper tuning.

I built J Wades CL600 way back in maybe 2005-2006?? that went high 10's at the track with some custom and some Speeddriven parts.

That's exactly what happened to me. I sold my '06 E55 in August 2017 and spent 45k miles in a Lexus GS-350, but the AMG bug came back and got me. I found a nice 2012 E63 w/ 55k miles that was a Certified Pre-Owned just 8k miles ago. It's my daily driver so I hope it holds up for a few years.
