What to buy…

Hi everyone, new on this forum, been lurking a while reading about W212s, but just decided to join and start asking questions.

I’m looking to get into an E-Class, and been looking at W212s.

I’ve recently been driving American imported versions of Holden’s, but looking for something more luxurious. Currently have an 05 Pontiac GTO 6spd, 2014 Caprice PPV, and an 98 Lexus Sc400. So in short I’m a V8 guy.

Whatever I get will have it’s function as the family car for when Wife/Kid/ or dogs and I go somewhere together.

So I’ve been looking at a few sedan options around the $30k mark.

2011 E63, 2014 E550 4matic, 2014 CLS550, or 2012+ C63 are all considerations. Even wouldn’t mind an W211 E55.

I’m leaning towards the W212 as it can be a nice sleeper compared to the others which are a little more aggressive looking.

I’ll be doing pretty much any work on it myself as I’m pretty mechanically inclined.

Would like something I can tune and make some mods to.

Anyone who has had familiarity with any of these or multiple of them that can give some feedback on them? Likes/dislikes? Things to look out for.

Thanks

Do you have a preference of in terms of engine?

w212 e63s a lot of torque and power due to turbos. With e85 low to mid 10s

w211 e55 supercharged but if you want more power you will probably need to upgrade the super charger. Not cheap. But probably has the largest community

w204 c63 NA full bolt on can get you ~490whp and best you can run on e85 will probably be 10.8-10.9. You want big power you need to supercharge it.

a lot of information for all these cars but honestly the w212 e63s is probably the best bang for buck car you can get right now. Market is a little wild due to pandemic though.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't have any particular preference. For the early W212 E63 I was looking at ones with the M156 engine. The M157's seem out of the price range. What about M278 E550 with tunes?

I'd like to be able to tune and mod it, not particular HP or 1/4 mile goals, its mainly going to be a fast family car.

my opinion if you want the M156 go for the C63. I don’t know much about the E550s. If it’s a family car though def go for a sedan.

Makes sense.

I see in your picture you have a C63 coupe. It looks very nice by the way. Does it have the P31 package? What sort of power do you have in it?

Any issues you have had? If I was go get a W204 I would get a 2011 or later just to avoid all Headbolt issues.

yea mine is a 2012 P31 pack. I modded the hell out of it though. Never had a single issue in my 3 years of ownership. One of the most reliable cars I ever had

I've owned a w211e55 and currently have w212
e63s.
Obviously the e63 is a better car, but then again, it cost me triple... And it's not triple the car by any means.

If your looking for value, I would suggest a tuned e550 with the m278 or an e55
For $999 I got a pulley, headers and tune from Eurocharged that made that car a extremely reliable rocket. Even though it was still slightly slower than my stock e63, the e55 absolutely -felt- faster.

I've had a built C63 507 sedan and both a m156 and 157 E63.... bang for the buck the 2012 with a tune, DP and E40, intake is incredible...and a sleeper.

The 157 motor is really stout... the early 156's have some HB challenges ...

Interesting. I wouldn't be opposed to the value option.

When you say 2012, you mean the M157 E63? No issues with that engine? Or the M278?

I loved the 156 motor for it's raw power - on the C63 m156 I did almost everything possible to get HP out and stay NA - with headers, intake, larger throttlebodies/ intake, E85 tuen and injectors, Akra exhaust and misc other things it put 517rwhp out.... but the 212 w/ 157 motor with jsut a E40 tune/tcu tune, intake and cate deletes is right at 680-720 rwhp..... for a 5th the cost of mods....

I think the value spot is 12/13' E63..... the few issues I've noted wit the car are leaky cam seals and the smaller single intercooler - the 15' + will be my move-up car once this has too many miles or issues - in Wagon formatt.... the AWD would be a welcome addition too...... 1st- 3rd with traction off can be interesting....
