intercooler upgrade

Thinking of upgrading my 2016 E63S sedan intercooler. Anyone have any recommendations? Does it increase performance?

A little more info. I recently had the "luck" of running into a small animal (coyote?) who captured a large turtle on the highway. I went back and all I saw was the cremated turtle so I guess the other varmint escaped lol. I cant make this **** up. Anyway, my car is in the shop getting a new front bumper, intercooler and engine oil cooler, transmission cooler and AC condenser so I figured if its worth it to upgrade now is the time to do it. I already have a Renntech tune and exhaust. Thanks.

You have the split cooling already so with just a tune and exhaust you should be ok with the stock setup.

If you want more cooling however you could get the AMS HX for about $750 but if you have an S-Model you'll need two of them.

CSF makes a very nice upgrade for the main heat exchanger (between the ac condenser and radiator) if that is what needs replacing; otherwise there are alternatives for the aux heat exchangers in the left and right corners of the bumper - CSF, AMS, PLM, et all offer those.

The intercooler in the V of the engine is the real culprit. These external coolers will only help very little unfortunately from what I've seen, since the intercooler isnt efficient enough.

It seems a matter of opportunity to me. If you can get a "better" cooler, go for it. Whether you see performance gains is probably a lesser issue if it is a no loss equation. I agree that the charge air temperature is probably dominated by the air/water heat exchanger in the V of the engine. The newer cars have the split system, which, you have to give credit to AMG for that step. Get one if it is not going to cost you anything and brag about it, performance gains or no. Best of luck.

I have the Private Label side mount installed on my car, at the same time i did the Pump rewire so its on all the time. I have noticed IAT dont climb as quick, but unfortunately they still do climb, Helps yes,brings down the IAT quickly which most likely is from the rewire of the pump, but as 5soko said, the one inside the engine in the middle is the big culprit.

On the E63S models, there are 2 aux HEs, one in each air dam. The right aux HE in the right air dam helps Intercool. Most IC cooling is done by the main HE in front of the engine. The left aux HE in the left air dam helps the main radiator cool engine.

why are you doing this? And if you're sticking with a simple ecu tune or stock it'll only potentially be beneficial to kill heat soak on tons of track time ... otherwise it's a waste on a 2013+ e63

Maybe if being left stock. But you're getting into tuning will also reduce IATs and potentially allow for more aggressive timing and boost tables and/or reduce the chance of detonation if the stock cooling is insufficient in spirited driving.

Any improvements on iat cooling is better than nothing, it was even proven that rewiring the intercooler pump to stay on all the time was a improvement over stock form. Can't really go wrong either way

If I'm not mistaking the intercooler pump kicks on at a certain iat,it cools down the coolant to a certain point and turns itself off... Keeping it running all the time will keep it cooler, and with a bigger aux, more surface area=cooler iat. Less timing would be pulled, more power retained

I have a 2013 CL63 which uses a split cooling system with a dedicated air-to-water heat exchanger (radiator) used to cool the charge air to the engine as it passes through the air-to-water heat exchanger in the V of the engine (intercooler). Per MB, the system is designed to keep charge air <70 C (about 160 F) in order to improve air density. It can only achieve this because of the dedicated cooling system. The CL does not have this additional air-to-air heat exchanger that we are discussing in this thread.
Having said that, I am assuming that this heat exchanger is downstream of the turbo outlet but before the air-to-water heat exchanger in the V of the engine. Is the correct?
One can see that all this can do remove thermal energy from the air to assist the intercooler in its function.
Do your E63's have the split cooling? If not, the best the system can do is cool to the engine coolant temperature (~80C or 180 F). I can see the point of the cooler to try and take a thermal load off of the intercooler.
I agree with Peter; if there is not compelling data that shows the advantages then it just seems to be a bragging right with nominal gains in actual performance. MB, AMG in particular, does a pretty good job in the engineering of our cars. We are blessed to drive these incredible machines. We are even more blessed if we can modify these cars to our liking. Have fun with the mods, really would like to see numbers.

Hopefully this comes out okay. This is from a MB press kit showing the cooling set-up for the M157 on the CL63. I assume yours is similar, again, not knowing about the split cooling. A and B show the cold and hot lines for the intercooler flow.

yah and the quality looks incredible too. They also have both the front auxiliary radiator as well. Which I might do also.

On their site it shows the comparison between this and stock and its major. Check out the flow area. 300% more flow
