I guess I haven't paid much attention to this noise to notice if it has been there for a while but I believe it has been getting worse. Its a groaning noise when turning the wheel when the car is at a standstill or turning at very low speeds. If the radio is on I cant hear it, It's not the sound of the tires moving on the pavement. I have a 3rd party extended warranty that may or may not cover steering/suspension components so just trying to get a feel for what it could be before I visit the dealer
Does it sound like something rubbing? I think I have the same sound and after doing research in this forum came to the conclusion that it’s normal. More noticeable when the temps drop.
ETA: just watched the video. But ya mines kinda like that just not as loud.
Ive had the car for a year (16 CLS63S), purchased with 11k miles, now at 35k miles. I know the noise has been there for some time but I think it has been getting a little louder lately. Ill have to jack the front up and have someone turn the wheel while Im underneath. Sadly, It makes the car feel cheap. Hard to differentiate if its a rubbing noise or some type of friction related noise from a worn part
there is a dust cover on top of the shock, its been a while since it happened to me so ill probably get it next week.
dealer used to grease it up or something
I had a similar but different groan come up recently, amongst other issues. When the dealer replaced both failed upper torque arm/strut rods the noise went away. Might want to check play in there.
I have the same issue with my 2014. The dealer put some grease on something last year and it was quiet for only two or three days. My service adviser says it’s evidently the steering shaft housing located in the firewall between the passenger and engine compartment and would be expensive to take apart. My extended warranty is gone now so I’ll live with it. First time I’ve had to pay six figures for a car with this problem.

More confirmation there may be part that has failed, trip to the dealer seems like the right option

Brought the car to the dealer and the repair was covered under Freedoms extended warranty. Foreman told me the steering noise heard in the video was the strut mounts. They replaced both mounts and the noise went away. While diagnosing, they heard a clicking noise in the power steering rack (something I have never heard in the car) and replaced that as well. I see its a remanufactured rack but oh well. Thats written into the extended warranty and this one claim far exceeded the total value paid for the whole policy.
As soon as I drove off the lot I was amazed how much tighter the steering wheel was in C mode. I suppose the original rack was worn down? Not sure. But the steering feels so much better.
Good, but can you explain more what is the clicking noise in the steering rack which they rely on to change it and the sound in the video turned to be from the support bearing of the strut?

I can only tell you what the foreman told me because I never heard any clicking inside the car. He said when turning the steering wheel you can hear a clicking noise coming from the steering rack when they were under the car while it was on the lift. I wish I had more for you.
Yes, the sound in the video was from the strut mounts. I dont know how the whole strut assembly is put together but the strut mount and bearing needed to be replaced and the noise is gone. The rack was not causing the noise in the video
update here, i have changed the struts supports and bearings on my car, both the sound coming from steering as the video up nor the ticking sound coming when driving on rough rounds didn't went, then i changed the steering rack and now all sounds went away.
Here's something interesting, and possibly just a one-off with my car, but I'm in the middle of changing engine mounts and when I went to drop the steering rack I found a bolt on the drivers side loose. The one that goes through the bushing (there is only one) on the rack, not the main bigger bolts that hold the rack to the crossmember.
It's never had work done around there, and because this bushing is situated sideways it would flex that bushing on turns and possibly make noise.
My car has the noise, but I also pulled the struts out to do mounts and spring seats so if it goes away I won't know which fix solved it. But an easy thing to check for anyone else! Makes me wonder if cross strut failures and weakened engine mounts could work this loose? I was really surprised to find it barely finger tight.
Just replaced my upper strut mounts, spring perch/rubber bits, and tightened that steering rack bushing bolt and my noise is completely gone. Fingers crossed I guess to it lasting more than a few weeks!

Sweet glad you found a new fix that OP could try. Thanks for sharing.
I might mess up the terminology a little bit because I don't recall his exact words, but the shop foreman told me the following. There is some type of foam I believe around the strut that overtime becomes firmer and that was rubbing onto the boot? I should have typed this when he told me so I'm not sure if that makes sense. He said they were in there with a stethoscope trying to pinpoint the noise. They lubed the boot and or the foam. The car is quiet as of now hopefully that was the fix

I was under my car last weekend for an oil change and brake flush. I couldn't find this bolt. I don't suppose you have a picture of it?
