CV Shaft/Axle Repair

Took the car in for an alignment, wheel balance and oil change after doing a nice curb check the other day. As part of the service they looked around the car and noted:

"It was discovered that your cv axle boot is leaking fluid. In order to restore proper axle shaft function and help prevent any premature failure, axle shaft replacement is recommended." They provided pictures showing what looked like black smudge. They have been fair to me in the past, but just making sure they are on the right page for cost (it is an independent shop).

Now I turned it down as they quoted $5,500 to do it for the front. Now I am use to the AMG price tag on getting things fixed, but that seems high even for an AMG to me.

Am I wrong or is that an appropriate charge for a 2014 E63 AMG? Just trying to get a ballpark of estimate on it.

Is there a parts and labor breakdown?
shaft is $1100 and boot is $70

are they also charging you for front diff service and re seal? That's $1200-1500

Also, likely just the boot can possibly be replaced

from the sticky:

I think that quote is out of line. If it’s not clicking, you could do an oem cv boot replacement. Same amount of labor to remove the axle but a substantial savings on the parts.

For your quoting purposes, the dealer noticed torn cv boots up front on my cars first trip there about three months ago. Quoted $3300, I'd have to review the receipt later to see if the actual was same as quote. They didn't replace the shafts in my case, just cleaned up, greased, and installed new boots to my knowledge.
