WTF?! Can’t break wheels bolts loose!

WTF?! Can’t break wheels bolts loose!

I’m changing pads and rotors on the rear of the SL 63. The driver’s side was easy… I broke the bolts loose with my breaker bar. Replaced the pads and rotor and torqued to spec. Easy.

I moved to the passenger get side and cannot break the wheel bolts loose. I hit with my air impact (granted it’s old but rated for 300 lbs ft) and did nothing. I then broke out the breaker bar. Nope! Nada. I was afraid I might break something.

How do I get these off without really ruining something?

Have you tried a 4-way lug wrench? You'll get more torque by pulling and pushing. Single arm breaker bars can be difficult to keep orthogonal on the bolt while applying pressure at the bar's end.

It’s happened to me twice. I drove around holding the brakes while I drove for 5 mins, got the bolts hot enough to be easy to loosen.

buy one of these beasts - over 1500in-lb 1,500 ft-lbs nut busting removal torq!
Milwaukee M18 FUEL 18V Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 1/2 in. Impact Wrench w/Friction Ring Kit w/One 5.0 Ah Battery and Bag 2967-21B - The Home Depot


Or Ryobi or other brands - Just make sure over 1200in-lbs 1200 ft-lbs removal torq.

PS get IMPACT sockets or a life insurance policy because these impact guns can shatter normal sockets like a grenade

1500 in-lbs = 125 ft-lbs -- OP says he's already used 300 ft-lbs with no success. Abusing the brakes is a method of last resort resort IMO. You could try a piece of pipe slipped over your breaker bar for more leverage. If a 4 way bar won't break them loose, ask a tire shop with pneumatic impact drivers to give it a try. When you get them out, if rust/corrosion is the problem, replace the bolts with a new set.

(I was sizing a hydraulic motor for work earlier before I got online)

Try the electric impact gun - find friend with one or head to Tire store.

Put the socket and breaker bar on a lug and have the bar on the ground in a position so that reverse will rotate the bar the correct direction and back-up slowly.

depends on which side of the car you are on to determine going forward or back. Driver side (left) go backwards. Passenger side (right) go forward.
