Popping/Clunking from rear suspension - anyone else?

Car has been doing this for a couple weeks, def getting worse. There’s a pop or clunk coming from rear driver side suspension area. Bumps in the road and even some turns at low speed cause it. Got a bit of the runaround from local service dept. Anyone experience this?

I assume you've looked under the interior load floor for a loose assembly/parts. The pump for the suspension is in the back rear corner. The bracket might have worked loose. Worth a look see.

I did. I actually found a foldable plastic crate under there which was freely moving around. I thought for sure that was the culprit, but it was not. The noise is very specific to the rear drivers wheel. Happens when I lower the car, have it in stock height and even raise the car. Sounds like a knocking or popping over any decent sized bump.

Sounds like a loose air spring or something. I'd insist that your dealer help you solve the mystery, you paid good money for the car and it's got full warranty. It is a new 2018 E 63 AMG right?

Sway bars not properly torqued

Just got the same issue. Clunking noise developing after 700 miles on my brand new E63S, and getting louder and louder. Turned out the rear sway bars were not properly torqued. Is this not lovely on a brand new $120K car?

See this is why I made the post - at least I have something to go off of when I go back to the dealership this week. I was told it was looked over, and nothing was wrong. Thanks very much, hopefully I have the same issue and it's easily remedied. Shame that we have to deal w this on a brand new car, but I've had worse. Hoping this is an easy fix.

Well

well, I also got the front parallelism done as well. The car was sterring on the right and I had to give a 3 to 5 degree tilt to the left to go straight. Now the direction is sharp and direct. Oh, and I got an error mesaage re: rear differential lock unoperational, too. All of that belore reaching 1000 miles. Otherwise it’s a nice car and lucky for me I am 10 minutes away from the delearship. They know me well now. Soon i will have a personal waiting lounge there....

i HATE when the stealer tells me "all normal .. or it's normal behavior for the car"

I insist on driving with them during road test but my dealer is so busy that it's near impossible to do this lately

I have this clunking sound coming from my front passenger suspension. I took it in to dealer and they found the spring for the brake pad plate was not tightened at the factory. The clunking noise drove me nuts for a few weeks.

Went to a different dealership today. I was able to take them for a ride and replicate the issue. They kept the car and are going to look into it - sounds like it could be a handful of things, but hoping it's an easy fix.

100%, it's not what you want to hear from any new car. This noise for me didn't start until about 1500 miles. Not sure if something from the factory worked itself loose over time. My main concern is if it did, will it keep doing that periodically.

Fonzie - any news? Have what sounds like the exact same thing happen to me today - at 1500 miles! Sounds like a popping coming from the middle/rear of the wagon. Add this to my long list of rattles, my wobbly front side mirror and and an intermittently working ambient light - and I'm pretty darned unimpressed with the car. Oh, I also had a read diff lock failure at 400 miles resulting in loss of power and the car coasting to a stop. Dealer said "that's normal - just needs a software update". This car isn't confidence inspiring. Really unimpressed with build quality so far; hopefully all these niggles can be fixed over time.... Anyway - any news on the popping?

Finally got it settled Friday. Brought the Service Manager around with me and was able to recreate the noise. He heard it right away and asked me to take it back so they could get under the car. I told him about loose sway bars, etc from people on this forum. They kept the car overnight and handed it back next day. Said they tightened a bunch of stuff up, and the sound was gone. So far they are right - I haven't heard the sound since I picked it back up. I asked specifically what the issue was, and they simply said they went around and tightened up everything that could possibly be the culprit - no single loose item was a red flag. At this point I'm just happy it seems to be fixed. Will report back if anything changes.

Thanks very much. I'll try that. Don't have much confidence that my dealer will figure it out as they couldn't even fix the wobbly side mirror or intermittently working ambient light. Will give them one more try before I bail to another dealer for all my service needs. Thanks again.

The best or nothing
Crazy issues with a brand new car that are simply due to an inability to use a tq wrench?
I have experienced the same before with other MB models.

I guess AMG needs to hire a new QC guy.

I think I know why the sway bars are loosened in the back. Since they tightened mine up I get excessive clunking/creaking on my sunroof as I drive up my steep driveway. Or actually anything that flexes the chassis. Argh. The previous E63s suffered from this as well and was a very very labor intensive / costly dealer repair.

The last couple of days I've started to hear a bit of noise from what seems to be the left rear of the car. Initially I thought it was some junk in the trunk, so I rearranged things and it seemed to go away. It was back today as I rolled over some bumps. Checked again when I got to the office and even looked under the trunk floor separator and verified that none of the contents in there were loose. Every thing seemed well in place.

I might also be experiencing the loose shock / sway bar noise.

Update: dealer fixed my clunking in about 20 mins after I shared insight from this forum re: need to tighten stuff and to check rear sway bars. Was done while I waited.

That's good to hear. I was thinking about waiting till my oil change is due, but maybe I'll go ahead and run it in soon.

Thanks, good to know that. But I have different noise:
1. Randomly I will have a noise sounds like some thin metal been slightly bend it and bounce back at low speed.
2. I often have some noise from my front brake, when you stop a light and release the brake & give a little bit gas, I will hear a "bang" it's like the pad stuck on the rotor. I had one time the pad really stunk on the rotor & makes loud noise as well, I couldn't drive, I let the car sit on the side of road for few minutes then it gone.

Just returned from the dealer. Service guys checked out the car and it seems in my case the clunking noise is not due to a loose shock or anti sway bar, but rather the shock itself.

They've ordered a new part. Should be here in three weeks or so.

Same issue here guys. Took dealer one week to figure loose sway bar in rear. Should have checked this forum sooner. Glad she’s back though.

Little late to the party but i had the exact same issue. They originally said it was the shock, put the acoustic sensors on and decided the sway bar was "out of torque spec". Glad i wasn't the only one.
