Question for those with tune (or stock) regarding HP gauge in car

Does your car's HP meter show more than 603hp when you are 100% in it? My stock car always hits 603HP but never has gone higher. Has anyone with a stock E63S ever seen more?

I’ll bet the gauge is maxed out at 603 but would be interesting to hear from someone who has a tune. I can just picture someone complaining to the tuning company saying the tube did nothing for their car the gauge still says 603 hp lol.

It's been awhile since I looked at those gauges but, IIRC, they were not affected by the tune. My guess is that the power meters are computed-- a factor of gear + RPM. Given the testing these engines+transmisssions undergo, you can be sure they know what the car *should* be putting out in any given gear at any given RPM. Of course, they might actually be measuring it... but if it were that easy, you gotta wonder why the devices that measure either crank or wheel power are so cumbersome (the latter being somewhat forgiven for obvious reasons).

It's a disply of a calculated value the M/E uses, the car has a "torque target" that it's trying to hit for given driver demand, and based on the VE tables and many other factors, the computer makes a (fairly accurate if unmodified) guess on how much power it's producing at that instant, and that value is passed on the CAN for other modules to use for various reasons. The HP is simply calculated from that torque number and the current RPM, but yes I believe even with a tune, the torque value will never exceed the "MAX" that the M/E is asking for, as the tuners get the increase in power through other modifications, so you won't see more than what you should see on the display.

I thought the same too, however when I got tuned my C63s shows 550hp when before it would never go higher than stock. Weird.

That's cool, I don't have one so I don't know for sure, i'm basing it off my knowledge of how the bosch torque based PCMs work from my HPTuners tuning.

I'm guessing it calculates hp / tq based on boost and rpm. Since the boost is raised so is the power.

I'll try it out tomorrow and see.

Did we determine the gauges are showing crank power levels--I assume so?

I reviewed it twice, once from a roll and once from a dig with launch control. On neither occasion did it show power levels much beyond 600.

You should check to see if your car has a cpc module. I got a tune on my car and nothing changed, got a new cpc module and had the same tuning company tune the cpc module and now those gauges go way higher than max.
