Disappearing center caps

I went for a spirited Sunday drive yesterday and when we reached our destination someone noticed one of my center caps was gone.

It must have come off without me hearing. I then walked around and checked each of the 3 remaining center caps. Every one of them was “unclicked” and just waiting to fall out too. Lame.

Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone else even checked? (I mean, why would you?)

I’m curious if this is a design flaw?

I can't say either way if they were or not, but it seemed unlikely based on where I park my vehicle, it is rarely ever left alone and the wheels were checked about 1 week prior.

All up just a weird experience that I haven't seen in any other vehicle.

make sure you are using the center hub wrench to adequately torque it on. (It’s in the bottom of the trunk). Sorry if you already knew this.

Oooohhhh that may explain it!!! I had the car, wheels and brake calipers ceramic pro coated. I'm assuming the guys had to remove the wheels to correctly coat the brake calipers. I didn't think to recheck the torque settings of those after they were done.

eBay here I come.

I don't understand they seem to click on and off by hand with no wrench need. I take mine off when I wash my car and then click them back in place.

What's the benefit of ceramic pro coating everything?

Ceramic coating the wheels is done to keep the brake dust and other contaminants from easily adhering

Yeah, I just checked today and I don't have any magical torque wrench in the rear of the vehicle. Me feels I hath been taken the **** out of. LOL

I took a look at them again and it seems they just have a form of "click to lock" mechanism. My guess, again, is that the detailers didn't fully click it into place.

No click to lock.... just tighten them.

I was tightening them today by hand and they tighten to a point where there is a very light resistance, you push past that and they click. Like a lock point. Then they no longer turn.

sorry my advice wasn’t of use. For what it’s worth, the cup shaped wrench is the only way I can adequately tighten my center hubs. There is no click or anything - I just get another 1/4 turn with the hub wrench. It describes using it in the manual as well. I have an ‘18 tho...

My 2019 came with the wrench, it was in a plastic bag in the trunk. I wasn't sure what it was at first.

So is the concept that you use a torque wrench connected to the nut on top? What is the torque setting?

My guess is this is just a helper and the click is the maximum torque which you can also achieve with you hand?

Not need to use any power tool. It is to tighten or loosen by hand ... at least that's how I use this on mine.

Hello,

The torque specification is right there written on the cap wrench. 25 NM = 18.5 ftlbs or 221 inlbs

Cheers

I will look to see if I have one. Thank you.
Still don't understand the benefit if you can use your hand to click it locked?

I guess there may be a fine balance between being able to tighten it enough by hand and not splitting it if using a wrench. Hence the torque setting? *shrug*

I don’t know other than I get about 1/4 turn more with this grip. Definitely needed it to take them off the first time as I couldn’t get them to budge without it. So, impulsively, I used it to put it back on (also it’s what the manual states)

to clarify, I used my hand. I did not attach it to my torque wrench, but I suppose you could to be perfect.

Unfortunately it helps only a little bit. Your wheels still get dirty. The better way to keep wheels clean is to buy the Carbon-Ceramic Brakes.
