19 E63 AMGs Wagon - at idle sounds like a knocking sound
Greetings

At dealership just finished up with 1st service and tech just identified at cold startup a knocking sound that disappears when engine warm.

Incidentally yesterday I also noticed in race mode, a metallic tin sound when car was gearing down from engine bay.

any insight appreciated !

And did he pull any codes? Does he think it's bad gas? Bad plugs?

Sometimes there's a tick from my exhaust at startup that goes away pretty quickly when warm. Not all the time, just occasionally.

From Tech : "normal engine noise when car is cold, noise caused by an exhaust gas after treatment function which intermittently causes the engine to run more roughly. Noise comes from the two-mass flywheel"

it's the flywheel. go change it. every E63 in my town had this, even ours.

replaced it.
didnt drop the engine, did it from underneath.

My 2019 E63s (purchased in March) from the day I 1st got it, has a popping/knocking sound while idling until it warms up. I was at my local MB dealership 2 weeks ago to have a new tire installed due to a screw puncture -- they had just received a new E63s that was out front. I asked the service person cleaning the car if it made the same popping sound as.mine. He started it and it too made the same noise as mine.. He said it had something to do with the initial timing of the engine and that the noise had something to do with a valve related to the exhaust-- that it was normal. A few days later I was at a Lotus dealership and a guy pulls in with a E63s--he too said he had the noise and he was told by his dealership that it was normal. Not that long ago I recall someone else noted the issue in a thread on this forum.

Is the flywheel issue a mechanical problem that will result in failure or bad for the engine in some way or is it just that the sound is an annoyance?

nope. Absolutely nothing to do with flywheel.
Purge valve. And normal noise.
