Mercedes me cold weather start

Have 2019 E 53 , now that is cold in Canada how to you turn on seat and steering wheel heat on when you start car with the Mercedes Me app? I can't figure it out. Second thing can you adjust the run times? The 10 mins it runs for doesn't warm car up enough especially without seat and steering wheel heat not being on.

I have seen that if I have the seat heating on full when I shut the car off, it will be on for a remote start. I haven’t noticed the steering wheel heat work that way though.

As far as I know you can't remotely control the climate system, seat or steering heater. It simply starts the engine and uses your last climate control settings to heat or cool the cabin. What it does do, at least in the summer, it turns on the driver's seat ventilation if equipped. No, you can't adjust the run times. It's 10 minutes and then it shuts off. You'll get a notification when it shuts off, so you can just start it again for another 10 minutes if you like.

Thanks, though I will admit I do occasionally use the seat heaters in here in San Diego too on "cold" mornings. A far cry from the good old days of driving off on square tires at sub zero temps in Nebraska in my youth ;-)

To be honest, I would not even use remote start at these cold temperatures. Warming up a cold engine at idle is about the worst thing you can do to an engine. It will warm up at a very slow pace and the metals in the engine won't expand to the state they are meant to operate quickly enough, causing significantly more wear in the engine. In addition you'll still have a freezing cold transmission once you start moving. As you've found, in the 10 minutes the engine runs it won't really warm up the interior, either when it's really cold. Best is to start the car and start driving. Things will warm up much quicker at the higher rpms and the oil will get pumped around the system and reaches operating temperature much quicker. The transmission will also warm up at the same time. I get the feeling that Remote Start is mainly intended to cool down a hot interior before getting in. In the summer, the engine never really gets that cold, so you are not idling the engine way off its operating temperature and the AC starts cooling down the interior immediately.

Agree to an extent.

Using Remote Start isn't really that different then starting your cold car and letting it sit running for 10 minutes while you scrape windows before driving away. The drive train will still be cold in that case too.

When I lived in colder climates, I had block heaters in all my cars. Made a huge difference starting in the morning. Also helped greatly with defogging/deicing the windshields as you get warm air pretty quickly. More environmentally friendly too.

My F-250 has a block heater for the diesel engine, but has only ever been used when we were vacationing in colder climates.

But, to the original question, I'm not aware of any setting for the seat heater on the remote start app. My car is a 2018, so no heated steering wheel option.

Other than my Porsche's I've always had cars and trucks with command start, when it's - 40 outside last thing I want to do is get into a cold car and sit and warm it up. I've never had an issue with a car warming up at idle at -40 using command start.
