My 2021 E63S Wagon Build

Over the coming weeks I'll share my build and thought process around it. Been dreaming of AMG wagons for many years. Since BMW won't bring M5 estate to the US, looks like my dream will become reality in 2021. Please share your thoughts.

Possible colors:
Non-metallic black (the only real black offers a level of depth not muddled with a rainbow of metallic flecks)

Graphite (this looks like my current front-runner as a non-black may better suit this body style)

Strongly considered Cirrus but I don't want a blueish silver. I want a real 'German silver' with depth and brilliance.

Also considered Selenite Grey but ruled it out because it's too similar to my L322 RR.
Long shot right now but still on my mind is Diamond White Metallic. My reservation here is that this is a big boat, and likely best suited with a darker color?

Definitely night package trim because I don't care for fake aluminum looking trim, and prefer subtle over flashy.

Likely carbon fiber exterior elements but this is dependent on my choice interior trim.

Wheel choice is simple. I don't care for the new standard wheels choices and always prefer forged. And black wheels are too racy and shouty for my taste. So that leaves me with the silver forged wheels.

Interior is either Chestnut Brown or Black. I find yellow stitching offensive (particularly in a wagon lol), so the new grey is out. I love the beige but it's too impractical for my use case as I have 4 kids (two humans and two GSDs).

Interior trim is likely carbon fiber but also eying black or grey natural grain. The only reason I'd switch from carbon fiber is because it's shiny and there's so much trim in this car. Sucker for carbon fiber though as I find it modernly elegant.

Options aren't really a consideration on my build because I'm literally selecting them all, including ceramic brakes because I despise brake dust and appreciate a little weight savings. Just wish I could order the calipers in black.

A few random thoughts.
1. I'm really sad to see the IWC clock is gone from the refresh. This is a shame. MB really missed an opportunity because I bet people would have paid up for this if it were simply made an option.
2. Why the hell is that camera placed on the top left of the MB star on the front grille? It totally doesn't belong there. I'd remove any option this was part of but see it doesn't go away so it must be part of standard equipment. TBD Please advise if you know what this camera is for and if it can be removed.
3. Love the new front panamericana grille.
4. Love how they also blacked out the roof rails with the night package.
5. Love the new touchpad in lieu of clunky mouse-like thingy. Also, the cool matching color dials on the steering wheel.

I’d go check out Graphite in person - has a brownish tint. Was choosing that until I saw it.

Went will Selenite/Nut Brown/Natural Black Ash/Night Package/Black double spoke/CCBs.

I didn't see a brownish tint in Graphite Grey. The metallic particles seem to reflect sunlight differently depending on the viewing angle. I've seen a similar effect in the Obsidian Black color. I've had several cars in Selenite and it is the best color for hiding dirt, but the difference between a clean car and a dusty car wasn't that dramatic. I made a mistake in purchasing a black car in 2018 because it was in stock. Never again! I hope to see my new vehicle in mid January. Fingers crossed!

So my order locked last week as graphite. Almost changed to Lunar Blue Metallic at the last minute. Checked every single box, except chrome door handle inserts and carbon fiber engine cover. Lol

Congratulations! My car was finished production on 12/15, made it to the port on 12/18. Hopefully on a ship 12/22 and here at my dealer on 1/15. BTW, I saw another car in Lunar Blue and I almost thought it was a metallic black.

^^^Wow, congrats to you too. Must be one of the first builds for 2021. Lunar is such a dark blue. If it were non-metallic I would've likely changed my order. What's your color?

I went with Lunar Blue again having loved it on my 2014 CLS550. In direct sunlight, it’s clearly blue with a distinct metallic sparkle. In most other lighting conditions, it appears darker up to and including black. My E63S sedan should be on the same ship heading for a mid-January delivery. Can’t wait!

Congrats! When did you place the order w/the dealer? How much deposit did you have to put in?

Hi, got lucky and ordered about a month or so ago with a $500 deposit. Before finding the dealer with open build slot I went through about half a dozen.

You only live once, my order is spec'ed for Brilliant Blue Magno.

Although, after seeing Graphite Gray, I'd take that color as well.

Arrived at Dealer

This is happening. Almost backed out at the last minute when it came to punt off $140k but YOLO.

Graphite/Chestnut
All options, except carbon fiber engine cover. Had to draw the line somewhere.

Gee! I almost thought that you had driven away with my wagon! Enjoy it! It will take a while to learn the MBUX intricacies. Feel free to reach out.

Same here, both on the YOLO and Brilliant Blue Magno. I also got the titanium grey/black interior with yellow stitching newly offered in 2021. I was attracted to the color combo right away in the configurator and then I noticed there's at least one press car wagon I've seen in reviews specced in that combo and I think it looks awesome. The only thing I'm still torn on is whether to go with the night package and the black matte wheels, or the silver ones ocdbroker got on his build here, without the night package. Both look pretty great.

Supposed to be an April build so I've still got some waiting to do.

ocdbroker, that Graphite Grey looks spectacular.

Thanks for your kind comments.
I almost went Lunar Blue but really wanted carbon fiber inside and out and felt like the graphite worked best. Wanted it discreet. Literally built the exterior around the interior. If I went blue I would have skipped all carbon fiber and did the dark brown glossy ash wood interior trim. I love that look. The blue is classier but the way I built this graphite is edgier. Next step is to paint the calipers gloss black and get some custom HREs. I prefer BBS but they do not make wheels to fit this wagon.

Pardon me for asking, but why change out the wheels for which you paid significant $$$ and get different wheels? If I were going to do to that I would have ordered the carbon fiber engine cover. Just my 25 cents here.

I picked my favorite wheel between the two offered. I hate the looks of the new 2021 non-forged wheel. Really loved the older version. And I really don't like the fake centercap look. Maybe they will grow on me but I doubt it. Wish I could replace those silly fake centercaps covering the lugnuts with something but do not think it is possible. The stock forged wheels will be my winter setup.

What winter tire will you be using?

I agree...saw the new standard 5 spokes in person and didnt like them at all. Its the frisbee they added to the inner lip of the wheel. The fake centercap thing is gone on the new version and on the old version all you have to do is replace the lug cover with a standard MB star or AMG hubcap, which is what I did on my winter set. See below.

I have Michelin PA4 winters in stock 20” sizes on a set of 5 spokes and they were great last winter. The rear 295’s are a bit too wide though because they're “real” 295’s, where the OEM tires are MB M01 spec 295’s, which are narrower than normal 295’s... Why they dont just use standard 285’s or something is beyond me, couldnt make it more confusing. Anyhow, the tires do fit with a bulge but worked well. Tirerack doesnt carry them but they exist, check the Michelin website and your local Michelin shop to get them.

HBerman, I was planning on using Alpins but didn't know there's a problem with rear fit as bullmrkt pointed out.

Wonder what Mercedes recommends for winter tires. I shall do some research.

bullmrkt, those are some of my favorite AMG wheels. Beautiful. 100x better than the new ones. I'm thinking about buying a set like yours only in the black finish in lieu of HREs. Was dreaming of the AMG centercaps too. Unfortunately, those won't work on the forged wheels. Such a pathetically poor design. Fake centerlock look should be illegal! Lol

I guess that I now confused. The wheels on my 2021 wagon are the same as the ones that were on my 2018 E63S sedan. Both came with the tool to remove/install the center hub. There is no new design IMO. Regarding the winter setup, I ran the Bridgestone Potenza 980 AS tires for for 2 1/2 years rather than installing dedicated winter tires. There's not enough days with snow here in Raleigh to justify the use of dedicated winter treads. However, before I found the Bridgestone's I got convinced to buy another complete set of RTR cross forged wheels which I now have sitting in my garage. Interested in buying them from me?
