2018 E63s - what do you wish you knew at pickup

Hello all, long time stalker of this section, and huge fan of the E AMGs since I was a kid. Finally getting my dream car today, a 2018 E63 with under 10k miles. I know I will be offered a slew of additional warranties today with the finance manager. Ive read this forum about windshield chips, extended warranties, etc. I wasn't panning on getting any insurances other than wheel and tire, which I pre-negotiated. However, are there other warranties you would recommend, or wish you had gotten? This is my dream car, and I plan to keep the car unless trading it in for another E63. I live in North Jersey in terms of road hazards and drive about 10k miles per year. thank you!

Is the car CPO or at an MB dealer? If so you should consider the extended CPO or MB warranties to take the original 4 year factory warranty out to up to 7 years.

Aside from that one, I personally wouldn't purchase any of the other packages. For me it is simply a question of why the finance guy pushes these packages. On aggregate, they make more money from people buying the packages than they pay out for repairs covered by the packages. Therefore in a purely mathematical sense, purchasing the extra warranties doesn't make sense. But, in the same way an individual can get lucky and beat the house in a casino, you could end up being the one that has a major issues that gets covered under warranty. It really is an individual choice based on your own comfort with risk levels, and frankly your ability to be able to be disciplined to have a personal safety net to cover something if it should happen.

One other thing to mention, these packages are incredibly negotiable. If you do want something, haggle like crazy. I recently bought a minivan from FCA and they really went hard on the packages. As an example the windshield protection package they offered, the first number the guy threw out was $1,800 for 3 years. I informed him that I had a Range Rover where I paid $1,650 for windscreen protection. His next offer was $600.

Best of luck with the purchase and be sure to share your experience.

Thanks so much for the advice, yeah I experienced a similar thing with negotiating wheel and tire insurance which I did ahead of committing to buying the car. The car is a CPO, warranty expires October 2022.

Is prepaid maintenance a thing?

If it is CPO the warranty should go 5 years from original in-service date because CPO adds 1 year to the standard 4 years from the new vehicle warranty. CPO also goes to unlimited miles (not going to be an issue in your case given the low vehicle mileage). Based on what you have said that would put original in service date as Oct 2017. You will be able to buy 2 more years of CPO warranty to extend CPO warranty to Oct 2024. If you intend to keep the car through that period, extending the CPO coverage would be worth considering. Most folks here that have purchased extended CPO will say good things about the program. Certainly better thought of than any aftermarket warranty service.

You can purchase prepaid maintenance packages. I think these are generally a good idea if you are sure you are going to keep the vehicle and hit the mileage estimates as service packages will simply add together the forecast service costs for the mileage you forecast and offer a discount for prepaying.

The other thing to keep in mind is the peace-of-mind aspect of these packages. It is worth something to some folks to simply know that things will be taken care of and to not have to worry about things going wrong and getting a surprise bill. That comes down to individual comfort level and you should be honest with your own comfort level and do what will be right for you.

Good luck with the purchase.

Thanks for the advice. Everything went smoothly today. Purchased the wheel and tire insurance only. Rejected the $5000 quote for the extended warranty and the price immediately came down to 4500. Going to think about it and call other dealers. Still figuring out all the tech in the car, but I couldn’t be happier!

Congrats on the new car. If you are considering MB warranty, the 4500 number is actually pretty good. That is about what I have seen and heard for 2018s,.. for some reason, and to my surprise, it is closer to 7K for the 2019s... I will self insure at that price, but 4500 would be tempting. Good luck with everything!

Congrats Fossa. Of course I'm sure you are aware that we are now going to expect pictures and details!

With regards the warranty, there is a thread on here somewhere with a couple of contact names of people who have helped users with very competitive MB warranty products. You can purchase extended warranty from any MB dealer in the country and the 2 names (I want to say Jeff and Cassandra) have proven to be aggressive in trying to push good pricing to sell extended warranties. When I was buying my car I reached out to Jeff but unfortunately (for long and boring reasons) my car wasn't eligible. If extended warranty is still on your radar may be worth sending those guys a note to see what they can offer.

thanks so much, pics coming soon. I did see the thread on the extended warranties, and I have email Casandra this morning. I will follow up with a phone call as well.
