Changing window trim to black

Well, here's the parts list to change the six pieces of window trim plus Nike swoop on either side to gloss black. I want to keep everything else because I love the finish of the satin chrome pieces front and rear. May even keep the swoops in the finish but ordering them in gloss black just in case. Job looks simple. I will report back.

I've watched the trim specialist at my dealer remove the trim on my E550 in the past. I seem to recall that he had a special tool to be able to lift the installed pieces without damaging the underlying door frame. Not sure if you will need this in addition to a heat gun. Also, on my previous E63S, some of the black trim had a different shade of black (sort of a purple cast in the sunlight). My current wagon does not exhibit any variation of this type so maybe the quality control is better. I'd also suggest some additional two-sided tape for the trim ends on the door belt as those tend to ride up the door pillars.
The swoops are secured with pins through the fenders so there might be some small fastners needed to secure them. I believe that the mirrors have to be removed to install the lower front window trim.

Good luck with the modifications. I know that it will look stunning when it's done.

The party responsible for the rear view mirror design should be fired. The edges reflect light, blinding the driver.

Never noticed. The mirror darkens fairly substantially doesn't it?

Yes but the edges do not. Very distracting.

Newly listed car... stealer asking $75k over MSRP. Lol

These are superb automobiles, don't get me wrong, but not worth $50k-$100k over IMHO. Just say no people. I believe most every dealer received some of these generic builds. Every single one of them has the same options with only exterior color and interior changes.

^^^Especially, ESPECIALLY, in light of my very strong suspicion that there will be a 2023 E63S available for order sometime in early- to mid-2023.

So, were you able to use the $2000 offer on your recent purchase?

Not exactly a reasonable timeframe IMP to apply the $2000 for another purchase. It almost sounds like it is an off-shoot of the regular end-of-the-year sales promotions. Maybe you could apply to get the $2000 anyway since you had your order cancelled and then you purchased another vehicle. Certainly worth a try.

Did you get an installation quote for these parts yet?

The side mirrors definitely have to be removed for the front door trim. Torox screws underneath the speakers.

Thanks, have another question: is it difficult to replace fender molding (aka Nike swoop)?

Random thoughts. After 1,500 miles now daily driving over past few weeks, I can definitely state that this is a clunky car around town yet superb on open roads and highways. If your driving is primarily around town, I'd say the standard wagon cannot be beat.

Contributing factors:
-Super heavy steering that doesn't relent no matter the settings.
-Overly thick steering wheel.
-Tires that feel rock hard (clunk over potholes) no matter the suspension settings.
-Transmission that either shifts too abruptly or is laggy (between first and third gears) depending on settings.
-Drives BIG, average to below-average visibility, and hard to judge front-end in tight spots.

1. Change the tires to all season
2. Transmission will smooth out around 5000 miles.
3. The 360 degree camera system is great. I've learned to use it for all parking procedures. The accuracy is very good.
4. Steering feels about right to me. My previous non AMG cars always felt too light on the highway.

Take care

Thanks Harris. Got my Alpins and new wheels coming next week. Can't wait. I love heavy steering just wish it was tuned to be lighter at times (like when making low speed maneuvers).

I C. I suppose that since I've had two E63S vehicles for almost 4 years that I've become accustomed to the steering characteristics. AFAIK the steering effort does change depending on suspension settingsettings and speed. I do like the relatively thick steering wheel too. Certainly better than the yoke on the Telsa Plaid! Didn't the BMW have a similar thick steering wheel?

Me 2
My both M5s had thick steering wheel
Must have for spirited driving!
AMG Driving Academy is the right place to experience and appreciate the value of thick steering wheel!

^^^Somehow BMW has seemingly tweaked just about everything in the M5 CS. The wheel is thinner, not Porsche thin but thinner than normal. More importantly, the steering weight is a lighter. Not too stiff around town but when you put into sportier settings it gets as stiff as the E63S. I love heavy steering and probably just need to get used to it again. Just that I've been nonstop driving my kids daily to school and sports lately and have been noticing that can't get it to change much depending on settings.

^^^Getting cold feet. Can't find anyone that's done this. The mirror stopped me in my tracks. I don't want to remove it but looks like it must be done. Also, I'm missing one of the 12 trim pieces and no response from vendor. Knowing me I'm likely to break something. Stay tuned.

Must say the black pieces are really high quality aluminum. No plastic. On my graphite wagon I remembered it being gloss black but this doesn't look gloss. More like satin. Odd.

Where did you get the parts?
Tried ordering Nike swoops from few vendors (mbpartsource.com as well) and the answer was “on backorder”….
