21 E63s wagon
What are your thoughts on the E63 passenger space?

I’m currently waiting for my MY21 to be completed, and I’ve yet to actually find a E63 wagon to sit in, but I was curious about the passenger space in the car. More specifically the wagon, because that’s what I’m buying. Some of the videos I’ve seen of the car make the rear seat in particular seem fairly snug which is a bit odd because it’s such a large car. Can this car seat 5 people moderately comfortably? How about front facing child seats? I’d love to be able use the car for traveling and family trips.

Remember this is a midsized car. However, it's indeed large enough for 3 rear passengers, as long as at least one is a child.

What exactly is your question re child seat?

Interestingly enough, my new Honda Accord (daily driver) is also a midsized car but it’s practically a limousine in terms of rear passenger space. The E63 looks, at least in pictures, decidedly smaller. I’m curious if some of that rear passenger space was compromised to provide over 35 cubic feet of trunk space?

Nothing specific about the child seat. Just curious if the car is child seat friendly. That video someone posted this past week where those two kids reviewed the car with a rear facing child seat in it was a bit surprising in that it required the front seat to be moved so far up.

As an E63 wagon father of 3 little ones I feel eminently qualified to answer this one!

The exterior dimensions of the wagon are large for sure because of the huge cargo area (bigger than a lot of SUVs), but the passenger compartment is still very much mid-size car by modern standards. If you can find a E-sedan then check it out, it's the same as far as the passenger compartment goes. That being said, we've done plenty of day/weekend trips with all 3 kiddos in back and it had a blast. We put the 7yo in the middle and 5 and 3 yo's in front-facing car seats on either side. Unfortunately the photo below is the only one I could find.

Doesn't sound like you have rear-facing car seats, but for others that do, one could be mounted in the middle so it can protrude between the two front seats, otherwise you're going to lose a lot of space up front. Might be okay if you're short (behind mom?).

Thankfully we just got through the rear facing seat phase with my daughter and she is now able sit in the front facing position. Have you tried mounting a front facing seat in the middle for your kids? I wonder if that would allow for more room on either side of the rear seat?

Regardless, none of this is a deal breaker. I was just curious about how people felt about the interior space of the car. Thanks for sharing. I’m sure plenty of people will find your information very helpful.

No I don't think I've tried front-facing in the middle, but I don't see why you couldn't do it using the middle seatbelt. You also might be able to use the LATCH's if your straps are long enough to reach the receptacles. However, don't think it's really necessary for kids, there's plenty of leg room for them in the front facing config. Leg room isn't S-class generous, but it's fine for adults too (I'm 6-1 and can sit back there just fine). If shoulder room for 2 passengers on either side is the concern, then not sure that would work very well either, depends on how wide/bulky your car seat is. Car seats eat a lot of space, so if you have one in back, I'm inclined to say it's either 3 kids or 1 kid and 1 adult in the second row, maybe 2 kids and 1 adult in a pinch for a short distance.

My father-in-law is an engineer that designs and crash-tests car seats for Honda and other big OEMs, so needless to say, we aren't able to get away with any shortcuts LOL. You wouldn't believe how many car seats we have...my wife is a real car seat expert too because of it, keep telling her to do a youtube channel on it.

We used to have a 2014 E350 wagon and like my 2021 E63, the rear seat and legroom aren’t large. I wish MB took 6-12” from the cargo area and put it between the front and rear seats.

The 2014 also had the small rear facing seats in the cargo area, which looked like a joke. I haven’t even checked to see if the E63 has them.

We ended up selling the 2014 wagon due to the lack of space up front when using a newborn rear facing child seat. Wife now drives a Lexus LX.

Sadly, they do not have the two cool rear facing jump seats.

I can tell you those seats are no joke if you have small children. We loved ours but not more than our kids growing up.

I was just about to go out to the garage and open up the back.

You’ve got your answer from bullmrkt, but I’ll just confirm what he is saying. I’ve got a 7mo and 2yo, one forward facing one rear facing. I am 6’4” with 36” inseam…the rear facing car seat does technically fit behind me but my driving position is compromised for sure. I would not take a trip like that, but 30-40 min drive is no problem.

I can confirm the car will launch incredibly hard with 5 large adults buckled in and a trunk full of beach gear.

For those that have never installed one, a rear facing car seat unapologetically engulfs nearly any car of any size. My wife had an x5 and it would make for a very tight fit for me in the front passenger seat. She has since got a new GLS where the rear seats move back and forth so that problem is gone…but to dominate the back row of a full sized SUV like that…it has me SHOOK.

Look at the rear seat legroom measurements as the best guide. They are okay but not roomy largely because MB wanted to preserve cargo area. The RS6 Avant slides the rear seat back a bit for more rear seat legroom at the expense of cargo volume. If you want more, you need to look at certain larger SUVs.

Rear seat can fit 3 adults for short rides, but only 2 comfortably .
