The issue is the location of the key fob relative to the sensor in the console. If you have keys blocking the signal in your pocket (assuming that's where you've put your fob), then the signal can become weak and the smart sensor in the button cannot receive a strong enough signal. The other issue is that if you are in an area with strong radio signals (that includes wifi), then the same thing will occur. You can always have your smartphone act as your key if you set it up properly.

Oh man I do the exact same thing as you, annoys me that I have to swipe down to a different view every time

New fave setup is to put radio on left/center screen and control it using left up/down arrows on steering wheel, reserving entire right screen for other stuff like map, phone, etc. It's cool because it allows you to scroll whatever you want including just your favorites with a single swipe up or down.

It's called Digital Key Handover and is a service through the ME application and the use of NFC on a compatible smartphone.

The MercedesMe app, if authenticated properly, and on a smartphone that is equipped with the correct hardware (basically the same stuff used for Apple Pay and Google Pay), can act as a key for your car.

Can you elaborate? Do you mean that you don't have to have the fob in your pocket to open the doors and start the car?

Don't know for sure about the one on the console, but the one under the passenger foot well does not, it cuts power when the car turns off.

No, power is off once the engine is turned off.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding you, but there’s a cigarette lighter under the passenger foot well?

The app to set this up is a part of MercedesMeConnect. There are several videos posted online as to how to do this. Unfortunately, MBUSA has not seen fit to release the capability as of yet. Patience is a virtue.

I think what @HBerman and @bimmerconvert alluded to is we have the remote start ability with our Mercedes Me app, use it to start the car, and with the fob in our pocket, we can get in and drive off, without having to use the dash button.

Correct me if I assumed incorrectly.

Almost. The digital key allows you to unlock the car and start the car without the ley fob being present on your person. The Me app already allows for remote unlock and start, but not if you are in the car.

Here are some videos on the subject:

I think there is on cars that were built after ~Nov 2017. My car was an Oct 10, 2017 build and doesn't have it, but Parker's (Vehicle Virgins) car delivered a month after mine does have it. A number of other folks have reported it there too.

In my case I wired my radar detector directly to the fuse panel near the front passenger's right foot.

In one scenario where you are giving someone else permission to drive your car without giving them the fob. The other scenario just copies the car code ,(similar to enabling the garage door opener on the mirror) and then the fob does not need to be present.

Yup, I was prepared to do just that, but when I was under there running the wire I ran into another cigarette lighter tucked away out of sight so I just plugged it there and called it a day. I have a 2019.

Ordered this (NFC) option, but the never enabled this for using outside Germany I think? At least here (in NL) it does not work.

I was under the impression that it's not installed or offered on US cars either. Same for the remote parking pilot feature where you can park the car from outside of it.

Holy ****, the E63 has that capability?? Now I wonder if the hardware is actually installed in US cars and is simply software disabled... Why the hell are all these features so dumbed down in the US market?

I suspect regulatory and liability concerns as the reason we don't have it here in the US. Here is a link to a video showing the feature in operation.
