Tip, Tricks & Thoughts

Forgive me if this thread already exists but this car, in all its glory with various user-interfaces and computer systems, needs a great resource. Please share your not so obvious findings.

Let me start with a question re radio. I beg someone to tell me how to simply scroll through my favorites with one-touch of the steering wheel button. Requires two (swipe and tap) and it's annoying AF. I only use satellite radio. It allows you to scroll through all satellite stations with a single swipe (of either right button on steering wheel or touchpad on center console) but not your 20 favorites.

And now a few observations.

-Although button to control passenger seat heating/cooling has been removed from driver's side door, it's nice to see they switch off automatically when passenger exits vehicle. Only problem is when you want to turn them on for passenger... somebody didn't think it through all the way.

-Interesting torque specs on lug nuts. It's been so many years for me working with only Porsche centerlocks that I forget how to change 5-lugs.

-These Pirelli tires suck for comfort. Not sure how they are for performance but could almost guarantee that Michelin makes a better all-around tire for this car. (Can't wait to get my Alpins on next week.) They seem rock hard even at the lowest factory PSI settings which are all over the map between door and gas filler cap. Who knows what M+S stands for on filler cap door? Mud+Snow? Nevertheless, with these crappy tires it's the only possible setting (39/36).
Need to look into upgrading tires...

I just switched to Conti DWS 6 Plus all-seasons. Way more comfortable than either the Pirellis or the Michelins, and the added bonus of winter use (in the SF Bay Area anyway). Now I can drive up to Tahoe in the winter (as long as it isn't snowing hard) and not worry about being all over the road or over the guard rail. No, they aren't as sharp as the summer tires, but I don't track my car.

both
I've had both the P-Zero and the PS/4 on my previous 2018 E63S. There was NO discernable difference in the ride quality between the two brands. Additionally, I'm assuming that the temps in CT are now edging below 45 degrees (it's November) so the tread compound is even stiffer. Nothing made any difference in tire pressure (hard or harder) until I changed to the Michelin UHP PS/4 all-seasons which dramatically changed both the ride quality and the noise level. M+S = designation for all seasons. I run my wagon at 39/37 all year with my Michelins. Never tried the PA4 tires, but I think that you'll find them mushy on dry pavement based on reviews. Of course, if you regularly drive in deep snow, there's probably no alternative. Fortunately, never enough snow depth here to need dedicated snows. When Spring arrives, I think that you might seriously consider replacing the summer tires with the Michelin A/S ones. I think that the Alpins are a total overkill unless you're going to Okemo for skiing and it snows overnight at the lodge. Continental and Bridgestone also make competent all-season tires. Yes, I've seen demos on hockey rinks, but it's snow, not polished ice that makes the difference IMO.

I'll have to check out the entertainment scrolling tomorrow. I've never tried to have more than 10 favorites (I've loaded up an SSD with 7000+ music tracks and multiple playlists).

Glad you got the wheels back on.

The paradigm for selecting the channel favorites is different than for scrolling through the SiriusXM channels. The reason is due to the fact that just positioning the selection on a particular favorite and holding down the "OK" button performs two different functions (i.e. bimodal) depending on a time constant: the first is to enable the selection and the second is to change the association of the favorite icon to another station selection. There is no "lock" function to prohibit the accidental association of a favorite.

I don’t think the pirellis ride to bad, but they do seem especially loud to me. I’m getting some dws 06 plus put on soon so I’ll be able to compare then. I’ll keep the pirellis for next summer.

Harris, I just want to mindlessly scroll through my favorites. Guess it's not possible.

  • Nope. But... I believe that you could set up a voice command to go to a favorite.

Figured it out! To get your favorites loaded up so you scan with a single swipe using either steering wheel button or console touchpad

... simply go here and see the category and then my favorites.

Are you saying they got rid of this button to where you cannot control the passenger seat anymore?

Yep that button is gone on 2021, and so is the set of buttons left of the steering wheel.

^^^Indeed. Idiotic, right? Slick touch though that heat goes off after passenger exits. Does it does this on yours too?

I haven’t noticed it on our e class but I have on our GLE. It will cut off when the passenger gets out of the car. I think it will also cut itself back on if the passenger gets out with the driver and the car is shut off at that time.
I knew the buttons to the left of the wheel were gone but not the control for the passenger seat. I use that button almost everyday and hate to see it go.

I still have the glasses compartment. It goes away with the gestures option.

Isn't the glasses compartment up top on the 21s? Could swear I remember there being one up by the sunroof controls on my buddy's '21.

I think they also removed the quick rear seat drop button for the estate/wagon or maybe it was something else, was it the air suspension button to make it easier to load things? Can't remember but I do remember they removed something back there.

Nope. Used to be in my 2019, but not in 2021 —> lacking some other nice features as mentioned already in previous replies . does your friend have gestures option?

I could buy changes like removing storage under the driver seat going from w212 to w213

don’t understand why there are so many changes on the same generation…early 2018 different from late 2018 and 2019, then 2020:and 2021. Different steering wheel within the same year? And so on…

my 2021 still has sunglasses compartment up top, it doesn't have MBUX gestures/interior assistant or 3D sound.

Mine too, I specifically skipped the stupid gesture option because it said it would replace the sunglasses holder and I knew I'd never use it.

So why does the surround view take so long to come up sometimes? Right on time sometimes but often too late.

Also, is there a way to get it to come up full-screen all the time? When I pull into the garage, for example, I get the front of my car in like one-third of the screen. I want it full-screen. Never appreciated cameras until this car.

I suppose that you could manually select the parking button on the console and scroll down on the touchpad for 360 surround. Alternatively, if you let the car self parking, the 360 view defaults. Am I understanding the scenario correctly?

I've never tried self-parking. Just talking about what happens when I pull into my cluttered garage. Sometimes the front/side view appears as I enter garage. But most of the time it doesn't come on until I'm just about parked. Too late.

I just tried several scenarios for the surround camera view. I have Parktronic enabled, but self parking. Going into my garage I get a picture of the car in 1/3 screen and the surround view in 2/3 of the screen. I can swipe down on the steering wheel control to enable a full screen view (either leaving or entering my garage). I also have the distance warning set to early detection.
