I'm curious to know why Mercedes would make such an odd configuration choice as base-model headlights on a "special" ~$175K model version.
I get manufacturers doing things for performance models like radio delete, A/C delete, rear seat delete, etc. for weight savings and performance but base-model headlights just seems nonsensical. WTF.
I feel bad for those that are new to Mercedes and don't know the difference, only to find out after purchase that you spent a ridiculous amount extra for a "super-duper" model that has the headlights found on a base E300.
There has to be some reason... I have no idea what that reason could possibly be.

I would believe that it's all a question of marketing decisions, parts availability, regional tradeoffs (the US is not the only market), etc. Of course, there is there is always the off center cameras on the S63 and the E63S.

These last few are right on. These options are chosen so the supply can be normalized and all vehicles arrive as ordered. The very easy solution is if you don’t like it, don’t buy it. The parts supplies of every industry are still disrupted so while I too believe that Mercedes has mismanaged lots of their standard production, this type of package is the way to do it to ensure the supply.

This makes me wonder how sales are doing for FE sedans & wagons. Are they successfully selling above MSRP? At MSRP? Probably too early to tell if they'll end up selling below MSRP, if ever.

Special and final editions I feel have been a disaster for MB. Dealers are still sitting on Edition 55s at a 38k additional package price and C63 Final Editions with a 36k package price much like the E63 final edition. So basically you're paying a hefty price bump for a less optioned car and buyers know this. No one wants to pay more for a car that has less options other then some extra badges and other trinkets. If the car were truly special and had been spec'd and marketed properly then MB would not be in this predicament right now. I suspect dealers eventually will have to take something off MSRP, offer discount financing and even with that they only have so much room.

After offering me the c63s FE and I turned it down (not impressed over my E,) the dealership sold or traded it to another dealership. They couldn’t get rid of it. That’s according to my salesman.

In the US there's roughly 9 FE wagons and 57 sedans available. Suspect some dealers are at MSRP already. Most have yet to hit floor plans.
