18' E63s wagon overheating

After having the RMS and upper main seal replaced by dealer and having the car back for less than a week, the transmission is overheating. Temp was 90 degrees Fahrenheit today and yesterday. Trans temp was up to 241 fahrenheit yesterday after a short drive (30 min) and today went for a little longer drive 45 minute mixed city and highway and Temp got to 261 fahrenehit, at 250 fahrenheit it turned Red and told me to stop vehicle leave running tranamission cooling. When i saw the temps start to rise I jumped on highway to try and cool down but it just continued to rise slowly. From my knowledge trans hasnt been serviced before, I was going to get it serviced when I first bought it because I believe its supposed to be changed every 30k but service advisor told me about 2 pre pay service packages that would save me $2k and when I bring it back in for its 60k service next February the trans fluid and filter will be changed.. i gotta call dealer and tell them wtf

Wow. That’s not good. Did you check the coolant level ? Could there be a puncture on the radiator?

Coolant level was at the minimum mark when cold, I noted this when I picked up the car from the dealer after the repairs and asked that they top it off before I leave. I watched the technician that did the repairs top it off. I checked it today before driving after seeing the higher transmission temp yesterday and it was a couple centimeters below the minimum mark. In the stop and go traffic today my air conditioning and ventilated seat werent performing the best, but once the highway was functioning good. Not happy about this at all.

Also important thing to note this occurred under normal driving in COMFORT mode, no spirited driving at all, no race starts none of that just easy driving

Park it overnight to see if there are any fluids on the floor.

Something must have not been done right during the RMS repair. Doesn’t surprise me as depending on how they do the job can involve complete engine and transmission removal. Just too much of a coincidence that you’re getting trans overheat right after a major service.

Chevy better own this whole thing now - it's on them and sure hope you don't have to report back that they claim it's unrelated without sending it to benz if they can't figure it out

I hope its just that they didnt purge or bleed the cooling system enough to get it back to 100% full. I hope i didnt cause any damage to the trans, the trans temp was in the red for about 20 minutes with the car running, from 248 degrees farhenheit to 261 degrees. At peak 261 car was parked engine running, but the coolant temp was fully in the red now and trans temp had only dropped 2 degrees to 259 so i shut car down and had hood open. 13 minutes later i turned ignition ON, engine OFF and trans temp was down to 246 farhenheit, coolant was out of the red but just at the max point on the guage before the blue hits the red

Chevy dealer didn't do the job properly.

Possibilities to suggest in writing to Chevy:
- Trans fluid lines not hooked up properly
- Trans fluid not filled or bled properly
- Coolant system not filled or bled properly
- Debris in the fluid lines
- Harness not reconnected properly
- Sensor damaged

Ah man this sucks , sorry to hear . These kind of situations are very frustrating . Keep us posted on the outcome. As mentioned above , never know could've been a simple oversight with bleeding something, or a fluid level improper ...

Im quite poisitive it was they didn't bleed the coolant system for engine and coolant system for transmission properly. The coolant reservoir for the engine is below thenminimum mark and the coolant reservoir for transmission looks to have nothing in it... Chevy wanted to take it back and fix this new problem themselves but I said I want it brought to Mercedes to avoid anymore headaches. They agreed and are going to flatbed it to Mercedes. I just hope there is no damage to anything as I was driving it around as is for almost 300 miles before the two 90+ degree days where this occurred. I think the transmission fluid should be changed aswell since it got to 261 degrees, operating temp is like 190..

they owned it and to prevent more financial loss to them they are finally doing what they should have done in the first place. It'll all be fine these cars are over engineered to handle excessive heat in episodic periods of time. And your T_actual - T_max delta was only like 20 degrees for a few minutes no big deal imho

call ahead to the dealer it's going to at benz and discuss your concerns and even as to sit down with a service agent and master tech if possible - they'll bill chevy whatever they want so if you all think things are recommended then that's what needs to happen.

was supposed to flatbed the car to Mercedes dealer on Friday. Thursday came around and was still waiting on final details from about when car was going to get towed. Went to the Mercedes dealer that was going to be getting the car to talk to service manager (who is related to one of dealer managers) and show pictures of what the Temperatures were reached on the dash and tell whole story of what went on. Sent service manager all pictures I had and told her was still waiting on final details of when car was going to get towed. She ended up being the one who initiated the car getting towed that evening so that Friday morning they could work on it immediately. Friday comes around and I don't hear anything, I get out of work early and send a text to her saying I'm going to come check the car out to make sure there was no damage to it from the flatbed truck offloading it. Then SIMULTANEOUSLY I get a text from both and the service manager of MB. saying "You're car is all set you can get it at Mercedes" and MB service manager saying "It's all set, they left a fan connector unplugged, technician said it went into failsafe mode, no damage was done, he checked rear main seal and its ok" This hasn't been the first time that I've had to reach out to them to find out what is going because they don't keep me to updated. I get there and ervice manager didn't know exactly what technician did, she showed me a picture of a unplugged connector, but that still doesn't make sense as to why the coolant temp spiked all Red and trans temp being 261 farhenheit. the car definitely overheated, the auxiliary cooling fan doesn't prevent the transmission from overheating, the coolant system for it does. I asked her if they had to top off any fluids and she didn't know. Technician was on lunch break when I was there, I said Ill talk to him when I come back to pick it up (was by myself). So I drive home and then get a text from service manager saying the "can you hold off on coming back right away, the technician wanted to check on a couple more things".........
So obviously he didn't even check everything out and she said something to him when I left, I didn't get to look under the hood when I was there to see if he topped fluid levels off because car was locked and they had the key. This whole thing has been a complete joke, no one cares in my eyes they're just trying to fix this for as cheap as possible. I doubt she told him anything about getting transmission fluid changed or coolant changed after this whole overheating, which in my eyes they should. I doubt they're going to unless I press extremely hard for them to because they're affiliated with and are trying to do this while spending as little as possible....
After I got that message from MB service manager I sent the manager a text about asking the technician to check the the oil separators and not doing it because they had to wait 3 days for them to arrive. And that if they're not replaced the RMS is going to fail again. After that didn't hear anything from them. Tried calling service manager close to closing time and no answer. That's where were at now, car has been in the shop for a total of 5 weeks my whole ownership. If my state had a used car Right to Return policy I would've returned this weeks ago.

Sorry to hear you are still dealing with this. Proves the point (again and again) that dealers are generally idiots. The variation in skill and customer service across the retail auto industry is unbelievably bad. One reason for this is state-level dealer franchise laws which skirt the edge of ethics. Apologies for the digression.

I would keep the car at the MB dealer until you are confident it is sorted. For me this would mean a test drive (you driving) on the highway followed by a long idle (20-30 minutes) in the dealer parking lot. Then open the coolant system and re-top up. Assuming this doesn't flag any issues, bring it home and keep an eye on temps and the coolant level.

the upside is now you have two dealers to hold accountable and mbusa - I hope it's sorted out soon, it's really an amazing car and it's rare for this type of experience to happen but man when it does it sucks bad

Got the car back from Mercedes after 5 days of it being there. Was told on Friday it was ready for pickup and all the Tech had to do was plug in a connector for the fan that was left unplugged. They said car went into limp mode and no damage was done. I asked service manager if he topped any fluids off, she didn't know. Asked so the car didn't overheat? Service manager said no. I had to come back anyways to pick up car, so drove home then got a text from service manager saying "hold off on coming back right away, the tech wants to double check some things on the car" ...... So obviously they didn't check coolant levels or anything regarding the car overheating. Fast forward to Monday and I get a call from saying Mercedes going to do a trans flush on the car. I ask about topping off coolant or doing a coolant flush and they don't know anything. Here we are today I get told car is ready to pickup from Mercedes. Invoice has them doing a transmission fluid and filter change, topping off coolant (.5 gallon low in engine, .25 gallon low in trans cooler) and also diagnosing the unplugged auxiliary fan. I ended up driving it for three 35 minute sessions (about 30 miles each on highway) after getting it, and then a little bit of mixed city driving, oil temp is normal (averaged around 180-185 Fahrenheit, transmission temp was around 200 Fahrenheit with a max of 212 after city driving, that seemed kind of high to me still, I thought its supposed to be around 180-190 max?? And coolant was right around the middle mark on the gauge. What do you guys average for transmission temps? Todays outside temperature was about 60 degrees fahrenehit
