What cleaners do you folks prefer for removing the ample brake dust from your steel braked vehicles? I've had several cars with the matte black cross spoke wheels and havent found anything that works exceptionally well. I always worry that the "strong" stuff will damage the wheels (paint? powdercoat? whatever it is).
sonax wheel cleaner plus ... it does about 75% or so job. It still needs some scrubbing to get the baked in dust off the wheels. It also does not smell that great but somewhat better than some of the other brands.
btw, there is a newer version of this Sonax wheel cleaner ...
There is no magic - elbow grease is what actually dislodges the dust from the wheels. Just use a brush and some Simple Green in a spray bottle. Has never failed me in 30+ years....
ceramic pads is the only way to go to get the brake dust under control...lets you do a good cleaning and the wheels don't look dirty within 1 drive lol
Meguiar’s Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner is good, the stuff that turns purple as it dries. It takes care of the huge amounts of dust on the Cayenne wheels.
Anything you use will require agitation. The slicker the surface the less opportunity for the dust to stick. I use Adams wheel cleaner followed by gyeon wet coat. Any of the new sio2 spray on sealants after cleaning the wheels will make the next cleaning far easier.
I second the ceramic pad thing. I went with the Powerstop Z23 pads and brake dust has been 100% eliminated. Like zero, none. There are times that I don’t even touch my wheels during a cleaning because they simply aren’t dirty. Changed how I drive, changed cleaning the car, and they were literally only like $110 shipped and come with hardware. Can’t beat it.

I got them from Amazon. Performance feels same as originals on the street. They are silent.
Does your click or bang when switching from d to r and vice versa? Only happens once per direction. I remember buying a set of these a few years ago and it was terrible. I recently put them on my w212 to test again and the bang is less noticeable, kind of like its loose or doesn't fit well coming from the rears only. Performance and dust wise, impeccable with my commute. Thats the only fault I found with the powerstops; livable.
