Care and feeding of an E43?

I’m considering purchasing an 2018 E43 from a reputable dealer, but there is zero after sale support.

assuming the car is in fair condition, what should I consider before buying? They are asking $32,000.

I tend to be thrifty, so am interested in the annual cost to maintain the E43.

are there known mechanical or electrical issues?

scheduled to be inspected at a dealer this week, before any purchase.

thanks for your help.

BT w, I’ve been driving older E-Class cars for 15 years. But that may mean nothing when stepping into an AMG. This would be the first.

What's the mileage?

The turbo V6 is smooth and reliable. Routine maintenance - brake pads, engine oil, air filters, spark plugs, coils - are easy for DIY or any shop, and the parts aren't pricey. Assuming E43 shares same schedule as GLC43, spark plugs are due for replacement at 50k miles, transmission oil/filter at 60k miles, ignition coils at 100k miles. Coolant and rear differential are supposed to last lifetime of the car if I remember correctly, or they're not due til 100k miles or more.

The 2018 E43 has 65,000 miles
They are asking $32,000

The air suspension frightens me - heard they tend to leak air (eventually).

My second choice is a 2019 E450. They both have the dynamic select transmission

The 2019 E450 has 35,000 miles and they are asking $36,000 but comes with a CPO warranty.

@tivoliman reach out and we can go over some extended warranty coverage options for your potential E43 AMG purchase, repairs accepted at all Mercedes-Benz dealerships and licensed independents in the country. tgibson@highline-autos.com or (855) 924-1333.

I just took my E43 w 60k in for the well known timing chain tensioner issue. There’s a service bulletin on this - google or search here in the forums. My extended warranty is covering it. Other than that I’ve had no issues except the rough ride on 20s with run flats.

I thought the timing chain tensioner issue was on the earlier M276's (3.5 liter single turbo or naturally aspirated) and was updated in later cycles and for the 3.0 twin turbo variant. (?)

Do you happen to have a link to a bulletin that covers ours? Thanks!

I wouldn't be afraid of air suspension. I think the benefits of air suspension (even with the potential possibility of random air leaks) far outweigh being on springs.

I've had my E43 for about 10 months now and I absolutely love this car. It does everything well IMO. Bought it at 51K miles and I'm now at 64K. The only thing I've "had" to do is replace the battery. Otherwise it has been perfect.

Good luck!

My advisor told me the bulletin covers our engine as well. Having said that my dealer covered because of my extended warranty but I’m actually not sure if they would have without it. I was afraid to ask lol

Just an update on my car. Original diagnosis was the timing chain tensioners but they also found codes P002177 and P001177 so they also replaced both intake cam shaft adjusters. Dealer now says the noise may not have been due to or solely the timing chain tensioners, but since they ordered the parts they replaced them anyways.

It’s a brabus body kit with a brabus carbon splitter. CLK has the rear brabus bumper also.

Going Strong

I’ve owned my e43 ‘18 for 4 years now. No issues with anything major. Only replaced the battery around 65k miles. Currently at 96k miles and still going strong
The most expensive thing maintenance wise was the transmission oil change due to the recommended oil pan being replaced. That was around $1500. Second most expensive thing was brakes and rotors. $1100 roughly. All done around 70k miles.
