E63s W213 Facelift (UK)

Hello guys,

Sorry if this has been asked before, can’t find anything. I currently run Pilot Sport 4s on all four during the summer, but would like to know an alternative for the winter season.

Rear: 295/30 ZR 20
Front: 265/30 ZR 20

Can anyone recommend any high performance winter tyres?

Preferably Michelin, open to suggestions.

I ordered an MB winter tire and wheel set through my dealership and am very happy. I did opt for staggered vs square given the lame winter we had. Figured I could always grab 2 more to make it square if needed.
Let me know if you’d like part numbers.

I see you’re running Pilot Alpin. Ive had a look online but can’t seem to find the Pilot Alpin 5 in my tyre size? I might be wrong though.

I dont want to up the profile incase it messes with the speedo and sensors.

These were a full kit from Mercedes - rims, TPS and tires. They showed up to the dealership mounted and ready to go. They are 19" wheels, but I was fine with a little cushion for pothole season. They also came with MO PA4s, which I was also fine with. If I had a choice I'd have liked to try PA5s, but they were not available in the kit when I placed the order.

I’m running the same oem 19” wheels and Michelin PA4 or 5 as well. The Michelin are the best balance for grip if you encounter real ice and snow (I’m in Canada) and yet don’t melt away if you do bursts to 200+ and handle fairly well on pavement too,

Ive used all the Mercedes winters like Sotto Zero etc. snd the Michelin wins hands down.

Thanks for posting this. The problem I have with the MB setup is the INSANE markup. They want something like $8k for a staggered setup (265/295) with PA4s on 19s. Tire rack will sell me a similar setup (but square, 255 all around) with either Pirelli Scorpions, Blizzak LM5s, Vredestein Wintrac Pros, or Michelin X-ICE/SNOWs, and my choice of wheels (Borbet, Enkei, OZ, among others), all for under $2.5k. There would be a labor cost to swap the wheels, or course, but in my experience that's no more than $200 (2x/year). Overall it's WAY less expensive to go aftermarket. Looks better too imo. So I'm torn. Anyone have thoughts on this and what to do? I need to make a decision in the next couple of months. On a '23 E63S (not final edition). Thanks!

This might help

I ran cheap winter rims on my W212 and had to keep a spare on hand, they bent so easy. I was spending $250 on a new wheel constantly + remount and balance, for the life of the car. It adds up never mind so much wasted time too.

With the "expensive" OEM W213 forged winter rims, - that I bought used -, they are still rocking it and ZERO bends. Strong.

Thanks, that DOES help. Even aftermarket forged wheels are a LOT less expensive than the MB setup, and way less ugly! But your point is well taken. Something to think about for sure.

I think I was out the door for just over 5K. For me, there wasn’t enough delta to shop. OE quality and fitment plus my dealership handles swaps and storage with a couple days notice.

Maybe it’s worth price checking another dealership?
Not sure where you’re located.

If you go aftermarket, please share pics?

I'm on Long Island. They're quoting me 7300 for BQ8403640 and BQ8403641. Would be 3500 tops elsewhere. I do agree though that there's value in keeping with MB for thw reasons you state. If I go aftermarket I'll definitely post here. I'm leaning towards MB for now tho.

You might have better luck not looking for the assembly. Get the rims quoted, and buy the tires separately.

Fun fact: all MB parts counters can give 20% off without manager or higher up approval. I don’t even have to ask anymore, my parts guys at the dealer know me and just always give it.

When I plug in just the rim part numbers on a site like this
https://www.mbdirectparts.com/
They come up as about $1k/rim
When I plug in the assembly part number (including tire) on the same site they come up as about $1700/corner

And, ebay has full sets for about $2k USD used, with tires. Might get a tiny bit of road rash, look at all pics carefully

You might even consider running OE 19" wheels year round IF YOU CROSS into Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx from Nassau/Suffolk Counties. Last Thanksgiving in my 2021 AMG Wagon, when I got off the Verrazano onto the Belt Parkway, HAD TO OBEY the 50mph speed limit all the way past JFK in Comfort Mode. Things smoothed out on the Southern State Parkway. On the way back to Reston , VA later that evening, took the GW Bridge thru NJ and Easton, PA. It added 1-2 hours to my Trip but my AMG was not ever used to obeying the posted Speed Limits and my Body was not accustomed to the bone crushing roads that I abandoned in 1985 when I headed West to SoCal and New Mexico (as a Ute used my bus/subway pass to commute from Queens to the Bronx to attend Fordham Prep...later attended the University of Rochester). In West Texas the limit is 80mph and most run 15-20mph over on roads smooth as Glass. Between DFW and Shreveport, LA anxious gamblers heading East to the Casinos average 95. On previous trips I crossed the Cuomo Bridge, parked in West Harrison, NY then took the Metro North down to Grand Central from White Plains. I was running DWS 06+ Tires on dedicated OE MB Forged AMG 20" Wheels that I bought off eBay from a vendor in California. My best time from West Harrison NY to Athens, GA was 12.5 hours via 287/78/81/77. If I hit the Lottery in my Retirement and bought a second home on Long Island's North Shore off 106/107 I would take the LIRR into the City or Take the Ferry to Connecticut in my next AMG for trips to Mohegan Sun and Newport. Other option is to live just North of White Plains near Manhattanville College/West Harrison and take 287 West Across the Hudson to release all of the TTV8 Engine's 600+ Horsepower.

Wish you luck on your dedicated 19" wheels and winter tires.

I just recently bought my first Avon but am already thinking about the winter in CT

i had a OEM dedicated set up on my M3 but they were smaller and uglier.

has anyone considered just swapping over winter tires? My local spot will store your summer tires for $100

i think that’s what I will do, saves garage space also

Unfortunately there are no winter tires that fit our standard setup, especially on 20s.

Not that I'm aware of. Hence all the discussions here about winters. I'd be open to all seasons on my current wheels, certainly easier than a full swap.

You can try what I did, which was to buy Michelin Alpin PA5's, although they don't have our size/dimensions in 20", I settled for the slightly taller sidewalls, it puts a 4% hit on your speedometer though, but stock clearance is more than enough on the wheel wells. Just a thought.

Interesting, what size side wall profile did you go for? Bigger side wall in Winter is a good thing, loads of clearance in our arches for sure

265/35ZR20
295/35ZR20


A lot of winter tires would be out of stock in July so maybe there will be better availability in September time

There are a few sets of used OEM winters on ebay Germany for $2k delivered. Even if the tires are a bit old, it's a good deal on the rims assuming they are straight

When switching from 19' from 20' wheels, does the ECU need to recalibrate? I'm just wondering if there is a way to adjust for the speedo being off by 8%?
Also, I know the ratio of size from back to front needs to be within a certain tolerance or you can throw the AWD system off.

Thanks this is good info. Which Michelins are you referring to? These Pilot Spot All Seasons? That seems like a WAY better option for me than switching wheels entirely for a winter setup. We get some snow down here but it's nothing crazy, and if it gets that bad I have a Volvo XC90 as well.
