@superswiss My VMI log show P17 as "KEYLESS-GO PACKAGE", but what's in a name?
P17 includes keyless door locking/unlocking, push button start and trunk/boot auto open/close (on supported models).
It appears 871 SENSORS FOR TRUNK LID OPENING/CLOSING is configured with P17 for models with the boot kick feature. The fact there is a separate option code suggests the existence of P17 isn't definitive on boot kick feature. Config logic is probably "if P17 selected AND boot kick feature is on model list AND is on country list, configure 871). Even the E63s manual is written with 871 potentially being separate from P17.
Aussie_E350_Wag, if your doors unlock when you grab the door handle, you at least have P17.
It may be useful to have an E350 owner confirm the boot feature was included on that model in at least their country.
You do have your key in your pocket, yes?
Is the rear diffuser nice and clean?
Found this post, same topic.

Rear defuser? This is not the same part....I can go crawl under and get a photo. I can say with 100% certaintly that this feature does not work "up north" when cars are covered in snow or salt.
Also....you know Ben?

@OldManAndHisCar I'm afraid I am guilty of loose talk. I always assumed there was some sensor underneath mounted through the rear diffuser. Crawling under there, I saw nothing but smooth black plastic. Doing a little sleuthing, apparently the two rear facing sensors (changed from "camera".... sigh... I keep digging my hole deeper) in the bumper detect the necessary motion. Too bad MBWorld doesn't let you go in and fix mistakes... or at least let us click a box to tell reader to look down lower for a correction.
Now I'm curious what the 871 option is if the rear bumper sensors (not camera) sense the kicking motion.
Probably someone else needs to explain since I've totally trashed the explanation. Must be my age showing.

It does work reliably once CAN-B is sanitized
else you need to danse before car will pay attention to your request such that you learn to use keyfob button.
In that case, recommend disabling the smart key and keyless go by doubling pressing the lock button until you see two short flashes and then followed by one long, enable it anytime by pressing any button when you are done the wash.

THIS IS PRICELESS - never knew this, and too lazy to seek this info, thank you!
The 3rd press is new to me. What's the difference between doubling pressing the lock (which disables keyless go) and then the 3rd long press?

So how does the kicking motion actually work? I mistakenly used the word "camera" when I meant the little round sensors that @6G Schnell posted. (camera is the device that is hiding above the license plate). But I'm still unclear what devices sense the kicking motion. Also not clear what the 871 SENSORS FOR TRUNK LID OPENING/CLOSING actually is. Additional hardware? Software/configuration only?

Re-reading this thread, I'm also curious why the trunk opens if you're UNDER that car (as @carlosinseattle related). If you're under the car, those rear bumper sensors shouldn't see you at all. For my part, I've been sitting on the tailgate with the back open (classic tailgating) and the damn thing came down on me. I found out there's no auto-reverse if it hits an obstacle, like garage door openers have. At least, my reaching up to stop it from chopping me in half didn't stop it. We just got into an arm wrestling match until I managed to hit the manual open/close button on the tailgate (wagon).
