Happy new year to you as well, you could stick with MB genuine oil which is usually rebrand mobil1 otherwise depending on how long you wish to keep the vehicle, get better engine oils like Liqui Moly, Pennzoil, amsoil, Motul, etc.

Worst advice ever. Depends...for the OP....do you like your car? Plan to keep your car long term? Mad at the people who may buy it when you sell it?

Simply check out the Solenoid Thread (W212 forum) and put in some nice new Liquid Molly 5-40 or any of the other options discussed at length in the thread. With our temps - the oil WILL break down before the suggested change interval.

no, you understand me incorrectly. I am not saying to abuse the car depending on how long you keep it. Depending on how long you keep the car, the oil used is different as you transition to high mileage oils, hence my comment, sorry for the confusion.

Which specifically optimized for 120,000 KMs+ and above engine oils, it is important to know how long OP plans to keep the vehicle and how many miles driven annually to recommend what oil to be used.

I recommend doing 5000-8000 KMs interval regardless.

I change my oil every 3k miles. My car is tuned, and I am not that nice to it. Oil is cheap insurance.

I'm keeping the car and drive about 10,000 miles a year.

Mobil 1 European car formula 0w 40. MB Approval 229.3 or 229.5. All the MBs I own use the same thing - M276 (NA V6), M278 (TT V8) and M177 ( TT V8) engines. I'm guessing that your straight six in the E53 will use the same oil - though prolly good to verify with the local dealer.

OP I see you're in Canberra - from what little I remember about that region's weather eons ago when I visited, you might be fine with 5W40 as well unless you regularly go into the mountains when it is cold. TBH I use 5w40 and 0W40 interchangeably here in the northeastern US. On a very cold day I let the turbocharged cars warm up a little before I really hit the gas ....

@Aussie_E350_Wag Use what Mercedes engineers specified, which is most likely Mobil1. Oil today is not like it was 50 years ago. Engines today have tighter tolerances and the oil is a key part of the engine system design. Occasionally, cost does affect an engineer's decision--even on a high end vehicle--but there's no evidence of this for Mobil1 (which is pretty expensive).

A lot of people have their preferences for their special "snake oil," but unless there is extensive 100k-mile endurance testing that includes an A-B comparison with a Mobil1 reference, the "snake oil" moniker must be maintained. Anecdotes don't trump Mercedes testing.
