W213 M256 (e.g. AMG E53) Highest mileage

Hello fellow forum members,

I searched the forums and couldn't find a similar thread for this powertrain. Just curious to see whats out there.

I'll start: 2019 E53 AMG 70K miles

what if any issues over those miles - how long have you owned it (time, miles)?

Just bought it from an auction. CEL on, hard misfire (cyl #1 gets deactivated). Was just curious how many miles I could reasonably expect to get out of it . If I could get another 40K out of it I'd be happy. Of course I have to get the misfire fixed first

sounds like your situation is very unique and hard to compare to other cars without known issues, but then again you know that.

Questions is: will you even get 1000 miles out of this car? I sure hope you got a swinging deal for the car and get to drive it or flip it

Ya I mean they bought it from auction it could be a collision, rodent, fire, flood, anything. I wouldn't say it would be caused by normal wear and tear?

Haha exactly- will I have to dump it off at the auction or will be an easy fix? I paid $29K all-in. So not a great deal but a good deal. The car is really clean inside and out. If its the ECU it won't cost much, ebay has some for $300 and I can swap it myself (I have a hacked version of xsentry). Hoping its just a bad plug, got a set on order won't be here until next week. I'll just replace all 6 (looks super easy) and see if that fixes it. If not I'll have to start doing actual diagnostics

In my experience a hard misfire is usually just a bad coil pack. I've had to change coil packs on my last two cars (Hyundai Veloster, BMW M3 E92). I've also seen bad plugs do the same- the BMW had this problem too, you get a series of misfires and then the ECU disables the cylinder until the next start. Of course it could be serious (burnt exhaust valve, piston rings/cylinder liner). Or even the ECU, which isn't likely but I've seen that happen (I used to be a mechanic). This is my first "modern" Mercedes (I owned an old 240D which was bulletproof but slow as hell). LoL the 240D would run even when you didn't want it to

Exactly / someone tried to fix it and failed and dumped it for $29k - but seems the OP knows what he got in to and he's got an exit plan which I have a feeling he will be using soon enough

Wonder if it's a salvage title

The M256 has a failing harness issue, that could be it too.

Still curious what is causing it though.

I'll definitely find out the root cause- unless it turns out to be a beat cylinder (no compression). If the compression is low I'll just sell it at auction with disclosure- don't feel like pulling the head just to discover I need a whole new engine anyway. Win some lose some. Either way, I'll start a new thread and describe it all, for future members. These forums are awesome and I plan to be a contributor where I can. The M3 forums saved me so much time and hassle.

cls 53, 40k as of post (will probably be at 55-60k at end of year, i travel for school)
gls 450, 80k as of post

great powertrain, just don't get a 48v made in alabama. germany made 48vs look very reliable so far
now switching both to 5w-40 from 0w-30 after being terrified by the oil solenoid thread!

Yes, in North America, all E 53 is made in Germany, all GLE is made in USA.

VIN wise, Germany starts with W. Another thing is Germany built vehicles has something else called FIN, which is a different number but it is basically a VIN but used in Germany.
