E63s PE louder than non-PE

So from research I’ve done, it seems people have said that if you have the performance exhaust with the flaps open on race mode, the car is much louder than a non PE car? If this is the case and I just care about loudness, does that mean I can just get the PE mufflers which are about $1000 on eBay and the car will be louder? I recently put on DPs with 200 cell cats and it is louder but just wondering if non PE muffler is holding it back some?

Or am I completely off base and PE doesn’t use different mufflers and isn’t any louder, it just adds the ability to control volume?

Hey @xEryx, try reaching out to MB House in Toronto. They may be able to help;

Ok maybe I’m wrong? I looked up the VIN for some of the crashed car mufflers on eBay and it seems that PE vs non-PE mufflers look identical externally at least. Curious at this point if anyone hear knows for sure if PE exhaust is louder.

My guess is that they're the same and it's just the flaps being opened that's the difference.

There's a fair bit of difference as well between the drive modes with the flaps open. Being in Sport+ or Race mode will definitely increase the snap crackly pop volume.

They will look identical because they have to fit in the same space, but does not mean they are identical when you cut them open

If I remember correctly, even the non-PE is also valved; it is just not controllable by the driver.

If you are mainly talking about pops and bangs, I assume the ECU also plays a role in the volume of those?

I believe it does. My car has catless downpipes and there is huge difference between sport + and race mode in regards to the exhaust note and sound.

This makes sense, no wonder in pictures both PE and non-PE have a module on the muffler. I guess besides part number difference there would really be no way to tell the difference outside of side by side sound comparison or cutting both open lol.

I found more threads related to PE vs non and learned that E63s have the same mufflers, the only difference being the valved H pipe the PE has which is just a non valved H on non-PE. I had the H replaced with straights and the tone changed quite a bit as well as some volume. While in the same pit, I learned about the valve simulators for the muffler valves, but those don’t seem to work as I got a cel and limp mode. Ultimately I was able to figure out how to disable the valves fully with DTS Monaco and now I’m running 100% open mufflers too.

Now my exhaust consist of a 200cell sport cat downpipe with straight mid and mostly a muffler bypass, it is proper loud now.

Sounds good as long as there is no drone on the highway

Very minimal/none on highway. At idle it is about a low and at cold start a medium. Also has more drone on comfort than race mode due to the lower RPM.

Sounds strong. Did you install the DP yourself or get a shop to do it? If you went with a shop, mind if I ask which one? I’m out in Boston and the shops here are quoting me nearly 20 hours to install this thing. I’m being told they need to drop the transmission to put one in.

Since I’m not going back to stock, I got the DPs cut. A competent shop should be able to do that in sub 3 hours by cutting between the primary and secondary cat. One piece comes out the top and another out the bottom. Rest is just unbolting exhaust and removing turbo shield.
